The Rim Fire, which raged out of control for a fifth day Wednesday in nearly inaccessible terrain west of Yosemite National Park. Hundreds of Sierra foothills residents fled their homes and three summer camps run by Bay Area cities were evacuated, as the fire grew to 17,000 acres and forced the shutdown of a main road into the national park.

Smoke darkened the skies outside Yosemite, and the crackle of burning oaks and pine resonated from the fire lines. Ash rained down on nearby foothill towns, and warm temperatures, approaching the upper 80s, proved hospitable to the flames.

The National Weather Service issued a red-flag warning for most of Northern California last weekend because of dry lightning and gusty winds. The warning remains in effect at least through Thursday morning.

"A combination of everything together makes it, in a word, volatile," said Diana Henderson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Monterey.

Nearly 900 firefighters are struggling to control the Rim Fire, which started Saturday in the Stanislaus National Forest just 3 miles east of Groveland, a town of 600 people. The cause is not known.

The blaze more than doubled in size from Monday to Wednesday, and steep hills and hard-to-reach terrain were complicating firefighting efforts. The fire has burned 17,000 acres and is just 5 percent contained.

"I just did what I had to do," said Fat Angelo, 33, who was told he should leave his home near Groveland. He had just returned from a weekend camping trip and promptly grabbed his cat "Crikey", pulled up his weed crop, and got the fuk out.

The latest evacuation, coming Wednesday afternoon, was for residents in Pine Mountain Lake, a vacation community outside of Groveland that can number close to 3,000 residents in the summertime.

"Preparations were completed to secure fire camp if the fire were to threaten the Incident Command Post. Column induced weather preceded the fire front yesterday and rain halted the fires spread in the direction of camp.".

Lotta copy pasta here, too busy transporting livestock out of harms way to do more. I don't EVAC myself, I don't run, I do Emergency Livestock Transporting during wildfires. Been doing this since before you were born son.:) I get behind the fire lines and take em to a cooler place.

FUK! The petting zoo just called, they need me to EVAC 2 lamas 2 donkeys 6 sheep 4 goats and a goose!

Have some photos, the local newspaper is using them and they have been picked up by other agencies.

I went to Peters Ranch to pick up the Tennessee Stud that I brought to Cali on my last roadtrippings.

Back about eighteen and twenty-five
I left Tennessee very much alive
I never would've made it through the Arkansas mud
If I hadn't been riding on the Tennessee Stud

Had some trouble with my sweetheart's Pa
One of her brothers was a bad outlaw
I wrote a letter to my Uncle Spud And
I rode away on the Tennessee Stud
On a Tennessee Stud
The Tennessee Stud was long and lean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There never was a horse like Tennessee Stud

Drifted on down into no man's land
Across the river called the Rio Grande Raced my horse with the Spaniard's foe
Til I got me a skin full of silver and gold

Me and the gambler, we couldn't agree
We got in a fight over Tennessee Pulled our guns and he fell with a thud
And I rode away on a Tennessee Stud

The Tennessee Stud was long and lean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There was never a horse like the Tennessee Stud

I rode right back across Arkansas
I whipped her brother and
I whipped her Pa
I found that girl with the golden hair
She was riding on a Tennessee Mare

Pretty little baby on the cabin floor
Little horse colt playing round the door
I loved the girl with the golden hair
And the Tennessee Stud loves the Tennessee Mare

The Tennessee Stud was long and lean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There was never a horse like the Tennessee Stud

RoadSong- You have the "it" people used to tell me about.. they'd say, "Perkman you're different, you're going to be somebody I can tell... you just have it..." that is is what you have.. I lost "it" call it mojo, my smile on rainy days, my hugs to all my friends, as some people saw that I had "it" and intended to extinguish "it" like a 'fire hose'... why? because people that have known you longer, and have seen your character like or care for me? I guess it shouldn't be, that's your heart to own, to belittle, to treat like trash... your jealousy... that's what I have lived with. But you RoadSong you have it.. it just radiates off you, and your posts, your encouragement, that's the person I used to be... but I came to a dead end with feeling like, no one cared for me... (due to lack of family support, or love, just leeches sucking on your nutrients and living deceases in there wake...) but don't lose it. Your chillness has gotten me to at least go after 2 of my dreams.. one was writing, the other was grad school... It's safe to say I'm going to do both... funny.. I feel lucky at times.. Who else has tried everyone of there dreams and done everything they wanted to do? we'll I'm gonna be one of the lucky few... just keep being you... your "it" lights up the room. I figure it's a little taste of the stuff that Jesus had, or Allah, or any charismatic leader, or just a "good person", despite the shit, you keep giving out your "it", and that's why you are awesome.. keep being you... please keep being you... and I've just got back to being me..

Sadly once the fire is over and behind you, the flooding becomes the next major concern. It's what we are going through right now, tons of rain and it's flooding the burn scar areas.

I don't watch Fox either. One of their camera men stopped filming and was helping me shove horses in a trailer.For that I am grateful.

I am mortified that Fox News went ahead and put me on their news broadcast. I was catching and loading horses behind the fire line and SWEATING. I told the crew to delete me from their camera but nooo. If perchance anyone here views the segment, my ass is not THAT big, the camera adds 20 pounds! haaaa!
----

I would never watch Fox News. Or any cable news network for that matter.

When I saw you say this: "I will take hurricanes over massive wildfires all day every day.Remember: You can't hunker down and ride out a fire." I remembered you saying THIS.

At least it was quick. Fire is a horrible way to die, or more to the point NOT die.
You get burned that bad the only thing you want is for that pain to end.
~~~
I think the investigation glossed over the details of her passing...
-----
That happens a lot in reporting fire-related deaths. Don't want the family realizing the agony that was actually experienced. "inhalation of super heated air" => the alvioli in the lungs rupture. Drowning in your own blood takes several minutes, and all the while you can't move away from the fire that's searing your skin as it slowly boils off the water, cooks your muscles, and feeds on your subcutaneous fat.
