As some folks here have stated, the whole thing seems somewhat surreal. I think it's partly because the trial was so drawn out, and such a circus. Then suddenly he was to be executed in the next 48 hours. Boom he's dead.
For me, the means of his death is also part of the surrealness of it all. Hanging? What is this, 1870 Dodge City? Is this an episode of the Twilight Zone or Gunsmoke? It's 2006 and we're still hanging people? You'd think by now we'd be able to vaporize people or something.
Why didn't we draw and quarter him? Now there's a method of execution. None of this namby pamby hanging or lethal injection.
