It's that time of year again! One year ago to this day, I posted this picture post: http://www.ubersite.com/m/79387. Today, simple text and a picture of the best player and coach in the country will do the job. Enjoy.
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
As a young boy growing up in a small town just south of Dayton, Ohio, the first football game I ever watched was Ohio State versus Texas A&M in the 1987 Cotton Bowl (the Buckeyes won 28-12). I was six years old at the time and knew very little about football. What I did know was that I shared a first name with the OSU punter and future quarterback (Tom Tupa), their star receiver (Chris Carter) was from the town next to mine, and there was something about the combination of scarlet jerseys and metallic sliver (gray) helmets that made me sit and stare at the screen in wonder. I've been hooked ever since.
I am ridiculously superstitious when it comes to the Buckeyes. Last season, my wife moved my Woody Hayes bobble head a quarter of an inch while she was dusting the bookcase and the Buckeyes lost to Texas. A few weeks later, a friend had the audacity to pick up the mini-helmet that rests proudly on my mantle from August to January and the Buckeyes lost to Penn State.
This season, I have informed my wife that if she touches anything with the words Ohio, State, or Buckeyes written on it, I will pack up my belongings and live in the car. Not only that, but I have performed the exact same routine every Saturday just to keep things on the level. That routine is as follows:
I wake up and TiVo ESPN's College Gameday, then make a pot of coffee and take a shower while it's brewing. When I get out of the shower, I put on my pajama pants and 2002 Fiesta Bowl Champions t-shirt, pour the coffee into my 32-ounce Ohio State mug (the one with Brutus on one side & Block O on the other), then sit down on my couch and watch Gameday. Later on in the day (before the game begins), I put on an old pair of jeans along with my black OSU Football t-shirt and scarlet Damon Moore jersey -- none of which have been washed since August -- and sit down to watch some football. Two weeks ago I got home after the kickoff, which means I failed to complete my routine, and Ohio State only won by seven. Um, sorry about that.
Anyway, for the last eight weeks we've had to listen to the media hyping up a possible one versus two match up, but very few people (including me) actually believed it would happen. It would too good to be true. Someone would lose during the season...they had to. After all, in the history of The Game, the two programs had finished the season unbeaten and untied only two times: once in 1970 and again in 1973, and they had never finished the season No. 1 vs. No. 2 in every major poll...until now. At 3:30 PM this Saturday, the game I've waited my entire life for is actually going to take place. It's like Red said at the end of The Shawshank Redemption, "I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still or keep a thought in my head."
Yet ten years ago it wouldn't have been like this. Instead of excited, I would have been scared to death. All my fingernails would have been chewed off and I would have done everything short of creating a voodoo doll of Mike Hart and Chad Henne and jabbing them in the chest with railroad spikes. You see, back then the Buckeyes, led by coach John Cooper, simply could not find a way to beat Michigan when it really mattered. In five years, OSU went into the final game of the season ranked in the top five four times.
In 1993, OSU went into Michigan with a 9-0-1 record, but were embarrassed in Ann Arbor by a final score of 28-0. I remember this game taking approximately seven hours from start to finish.
In 1995, Tim Biakabutuka ran for 313 yards against the 10-0 Buckeyes en route to a 31-28 victory. I'm still not convinced this game even took place. Tim Biakabutuka? 313 yards? No way. Not possible.
In 1996, the 10-0 Bucks took a 9-0 lead going into halftime, but on the second play of the third quarter, cornerback Shawn Springs slipped and fell allowing Tai Streets to turn a short catch into a 69 yard touchdown reception -- the lone six pointer in the Wolverines' 13-9 victory. I don't remember anything that happened after this play because I blacked out and hit my head on a table which sent me into a deep coma. When I woke up the Buckeyes were playing Arizona State in the Rose Bowl.
In 1997, the 9-1, and fourth-ranked Buckeyes went into Michigan and fell behind 20-0, before eventually losing 20-14 thanks in large part to the play of (Ohio native) Charles Woodson. Woodson, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy, scored on a punt return and then donned the Heisman pose in the back of the end zone as I repeatedly banged my head against the concrete wall of my dorm room.
I can't even begin to describe how awful it was to watch those games. Just thinking about them now puts me in a foul mood. It actually got to the point where I thought of The Game like a visit to the dentist -- something that was not fun and would most likely cause me pain before it was over, but also something that had to be done.
All that nonsense flew right out the window when a man in a sweater vest arrived in Columbus. Aside from reestablishing the rivalry as the most important contest of the of the year (Cooper had tried to downplay it as "just another game"), Jim Tressel also injected some much-needed confidence to the program and more importantly, the fans, by going into Ann Arbor and handing the Wolverines a defeat in his first year as head coach. This victory ensured that the OSU fans would no longer sit and wait for the other shoe to drop when watching The Game. We now had a coach who knew what he was doing and could devise the right gameplan to defeat our hated rivals...and best of all, every last one of us knew it.
It all culminated during the championship run of 2002. Had Cooper been the coach, it's probable the Buckeyes would have found a way to lose the game. However, with Coach Tressel at the helm, the Bucks came from behind to take the lead, then managed to hold off the determined Wolverines for a 14-9 victory and a spot in the national title game.
It's funny, through all the heartbreaking losses in the '90s (and there were several), I never once shed a tear when Ohio State lost. But when Will Allen intercepted John Navarre's pass in the end zone with no time left back in '02, I cried tears of joy and did not stop for 10 minutes. That game was not simply a victory over the maize and blue, it was an exorcism of all the demons from the '90s.
Since that fateful November day, the Ohio State Michigan game no longer looms like a mountain, but merely a small hill the Buckeyes must climb to reach the pinnacle of college football. More importantly, it's become fun again.
A few nights ago my wife and I were driving home from running a few errands and out of nowhere I broke into a huge grin. Think the Grinch, from How the Grinch Stole Christmas -- the cartoon, not the movie, when he comes up with an idea on how to stop Christmas from coming. When my wife asked me why I was smiling like a lottery winner, I replied, "I'm just thinking about the game on Saturday."
And oh what a game it will be.

I would like to congratulate the Big 10 for its lucky wins in the Outback and Capital One bowls. Arkansas is overrated, and Tenessee is just having a bad year.
I also want to congratulate OSU for playing their hardest. Maybe next year when they go back to their schedule of teams like Northern Illinois, they'll be happy again at their overly inflated stats.
--------------
Florida's schedule included such powerhouses as Western Carolina, Central Florida, and Southern Miss.
Here's what happened in the UF/Ohio State game, just for the record:
Thanks to the loss of their #1 receiver and primary deep threat, OSU's offense could not move the ball right off the bat. Losing Teddy completely threw off the game plan and it took them a while to figure out what to do (Tressel's faul). Because the offense could do nothing, the defense was on the field too much and couldn't adjust to UF's offense. This caused OSU to fall behind quickly. They managed to scrape together a nice drive to bring the score to 21-14, but after that bad playcalling on offense and no defensive execution resulted in UF getting a nice advantage and going into halftime up big.
The combination of Teddy being out and being behind by 20 points turned Ohio State from a dynamic offense into a one-dimensional mess of confusion.
Because they knew OSU was passing, Florida's defensive ends were able to speed rush around the ends every play, they spied Troy with their fastest LB (basically a hook/curl zone that also serves to take away slant/crossing routes), they played double-safeties over the top (cover 2) and tight man-to-man coverage underneath.
They outcoached and outplayed OSU, and that's all there is to it.
But really, so what? It bothered me for about an hour, then I went to sleep.

In all seriousness, though, most of the ESPN analysts were wrong in their predictions for all 3 Big10/SEC bowl games.

...this year.
It just happens that this year the top three teams in the Big Ten are dominant. The only teams to beat them have been one another. You can't penalize the rest of the conference for displaying parity between the bottom 8 (you keep saying 7; there are 11 teams) while you trumpet the SEC for parity among them all. The worst Big Ten teams could easily destroy the worst SEC teams.

I'm going to have to support Schongly's claim, actually. Analysts don't say the SEC is the best conference; they say it's the toughest conference. The difference would be that most of the teams in the SEC are worth their salt relative to the rest of the teams of the country. In other words, the other conferences may have 1 or 2 of the BEST teams, but the SEC has about 7-8 of the ALMOST BEST or VERY GOOD teams. This would produce a record disparity, as the other top teams around the country have much easier schedules.
To illustrate this, we can look at this year's interconference play between the SEC and the Pac-10. The only good PAC-10 team, USC, destroyed the SEC's #2 team. At the same time, Pac-10's #2 team California was soundly defeated by the SEC's #5 team. The SEC team won every other matchup vs Pac-10 this year. (i.e. Auburn over Washington State, LSU over Arizona) This proves the point very well. USC deserves its high ranking over SEC teams, but people should keep in mind that the rest of the conference consists of a bunch of pushovers with respect to the SEC. The same logic applies to the Big Ten.
For example... it may be arguable if there's any SEC teams that could beat the top 3 Big Ten teams. But it's pretty agreeable that almost the entire SEC could cream the other 7 teams of the Big Ten.
In conclusion...the SEC is the "toughest" conference because everyone is bound to lose at least once, due to the high number of fairly good teams.
+ 2 on your next two posts for taking the time...whoever the fuck you are.
I didn't say that the SEC had "the best teams" but yes, it IS the toughest conference to play in, which is why even the quality teams come out of there with one, and sometimes TWO losses. Even the Vandy's of the conference can rise up and beat a Top 10 SEC team from time to time..

Razorbacks represent boi! Don't underestimate the Hogs. We're on fire. I know we won't win it all but don't be surprised to see us go farther than you'd think we would(who'd have thunk we'd even get this far). We've been showing we can bring the noise during the big games. And we got more than Darren McFadden(our personal football Jesus). We also got Marcus Monk(that giant WILL catch that damn ball if you even put it near him), Felix Jones(that fucker can run), and our QB while not that impressive is however fairly consistent. Our defensive has also been improving throughout the season and has been showing they can stand up to good teams. The only problem we have is fucking Head Coach Houston Nut(Damn that idiotic man), and that we happen to be fucking Arkansas and God enjoys bringing us this far so he can rip it all away.

IMO, the only team in the SEC that would give Ohio State a challenge is LSU because they match up well with the Bucks.
Also, watch for LSU's defensive coordinator (Bo Pelini) to jump ship to Michigan State in the upcoming months/weeks.

Besides, the top ranked team in the SEC is the Gators. The Gators make the SEC look "tough" because they drop punts, fumble the ball, and manage the clock like fools, allowing for a close game that would otherwise be a blowout. Shitty close sloppy football games don't indicate a "tough" conference. They indicate a bunch of moronic players with shitty mistakes.

Acarnis just spat out a bunch of irrelevant bullshit. Except for the PAC-10: they blow. Just because the SEC was rated higher does not make it the "most difficult conference". I don't think the SEC has played anyone of value outside of their Conference, minus USC, whatsoever. This is like saying the NL West is the best division because everyone is .500.

Looking at this link, http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls05/news/story?page=capitalone_history
It seems that the SEC and Big Ten teams starting playing each other 1993 in this Capital One Bowl.
So I will expand myself and say the all-time Capital One record is 8-5, SEC. This favors Schongly's claim that the Big Ten only produces 1-2 quality teams each year, the rest being crappy.

Auburn - Good defense. Lost to Arkanssass & Georgia.
Florida - Chris Leak & a bunch of spooks. Kicker makes 1 out of every 5 FGs.
Tennessee - Lost to Arkansasss & the Gators.
Arkansas - Do they have anything but a RB? USC destroyed them.
LSU - Overratted. Lost to Gators.
South Carolina - Stever Spurrier? Almost beat the overrated Gators.
Georgia - They still have a team? Lost to WVU in a bowl game last year.
SEC is not the best conference, just the most overrated. If OSU, Michigan, & Wisconsin didn't pound the shit out of the rest of the teams, they'd all be overrated to.

Now, research the hoops tournament the same number of years...I'm telling you...1-7 or some such ridiculous number.
-----
Two years ago, There were almost 3 Big Ten teams and Bobby Knight's Tech team in the final four. In the Elite Eight, UNC beat Wisconsin. In the Final Four, UNC beat MSU. In the championship game, UNC beat Illinois.
Illinois 5-1
MSU 4-1
Wisconsin 3-1
By my calculations, no SEC team made it to the Sweet Sixteen, except for Kentucky, who was beaten by Michigan State in the Elite Eight. Alabama lost to 12-seeded UW-Milwaukee in the first round. UWM went on to beat BC and was eventually beaten by Illinois. Florida lost to Nova in the second round after barely edging THE University of Ohio in round one. I'm surprised to find that these were the only teams from the conference that even made it to the tournament.
The SEC isn't superior in either sport. Face it.

Last year the Big Ten was 3-4, with the top 3 teams winning. The SEC was 4-2, with the SEC number two team in Auburn losing to the Big Ten number 3 team Wisconsin and the SEC 3 team Florida beating Big Ten 4 Iowa. The top 2 SEC teams both lost.
Year prior Big ten was 3-3, going 2-1 in games against the SEC. The SEC was 4-2.
Year before that Big Ten went 3-5 in Bowl Games, going 1-2 agains the SEC. the SEC was 3-2 that year.

Michigan is 1-2 in BCS games, Ohio state is 4-0 in BCS games, Wisconsin is 2-0 in BCS games. The Rest of the Big Ten is 1-3 with 4 different teams. The top 3 Big Ten teams are 7-2 against "the best" teams in the nation. Florida is 2-1 amd Lsu is 2-0. Vols are 1-1, and georgia is 1-1, Auburn is 1-0, Alabama is 0-1. The SEC's top 3 teams are 5-2.
The Big Ten has had 7 teams make BCS games, The SEC has had 6. Overall Big Ten Record is 8-5, Sec is 7-4. SEC teams have been invited 11 times, Big Ten teams have been invited 13, meaning 3 times has an SEC team gained an at large bid, while 5 of the 8 times a Big Ten Team has.
BCS games where Big Ten faced SEC
Michigan 35-Alabama 34 in 1999

The following teams could beat the entire Big Ten 5 out of 10 times (With the same two exceptions and maybe, only 3 out of 10 times vs. Wisconsin):
Vanderbilt
Alabama
The SEC is pretty fucking strong from top to bottom...The Big Ten is strong at the top and that's IT.
And I don't even LIKE SEC football. As a gambler and sports prognosticator, it's just my expert observation.

The funny thing is that you HAVE been watching SEC football since before I was born. I would bet on that. The thing you need to consider is that they aren't playing these games 30 years ago. They're playing today, and the three of the four best teams in the country are from the Big Ten. Only Florida creeps in at number three, and BARELY. Arkansas? Gimme a fucking break. You may not watch the Big Ten but I watch everything, and I'm good at this. Arkansas loses to OSU and Michigan 10 times out of ten and Wisconsin 8 times out of ten. Auburn will lose their bowl game against Wisconsin AGAIN. PSU would beat any team but Florida or Arkansas the majority of the the same is true for Iowa when Drew Tate is healthy. Even the Goofs and Illinois are better than most of the SEC.

Bob predicts that the BCS will either be OSU and Mich or Flordia/Arkansas
The SEC is so damn good that whoever comes out of that with 1 loss needs to be considered.
Notre Dame lost to Mich...therefore they are not worthy.
USC lost to Oregon St...therefore they are not worthy.
No 1 lost team in the Big East is worthy.
Therefore only Mich or Flordia/Arkansas, so long as they both have 1 loss.
I bet on a rematch.

Tom - I didnt say he was not a good coach. I said that you cant say he's the best coach in the country. I said that he has the easiest job BY FAR of any coach in the country. It's not that he keeps the talent in the state, it's that he doesn't even need to recruit outside the state to field the best team in the country. Any coach can keep the talent in the state. Every coach does. The only guy in the Big Ten who didn't was Ron Turner, who had the strangest recruiting philosophy I've ever seen. I guess Glen Mason doesn't do a good job of it either, but it's because he seems not to offer to recruits he doesn't think he can get. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
Shlongy - I dont think there's a single team from the SEC who can beat Wisconsin 3 times out of 10.
The Big Ten this year is more top heavy than usual. There are only three really good teams, and that's not common. Watch the Capitol One bowl this year and you'll see what the Big Ten is all about. Wisconsin beat up on Auburn last year and will again this year. Speed kills, but not when it's lying on a stretcher.

-------------------------
Wait a second, he's not a good coach because he keeps the players from one of the most talent rich states in state? News to me. Are the coaches at USC or Florida any less of coaches because they use their resources to their advantage?
Cooper used to spurn the in-state talent and recruit in California or Florida and that's one of the main reasons he always lost to Michigan...those kids didn't understand it. Plus he let players like Charles Woodson leave the state. What Tressel's done is keep the talent in-state, well...in state.
Your argument just doesn't hold water.

A Big East football fan talking shit about the Big Ten? When did this start happening? Big Ten fans have only recently decided Louisville is good enough to consider letting them join the "Notre Dame should be the twlefthtdth team in the conference" talks. On that same note, the best team in the conference was a C-USA team two years ago.
The SEC sucks too. Someday the people who do the preseason ratings will realize this.

BEST COACH IN THE COUNTRY!?? Based on what?
Tressel has the easiest job in the country. With the exception of LSU and, to a much much lesser extent, Rutgers, there isn't another school in the country with such a high number of Division one recruits without an in-state power rival. The guys the Tressel decides not to DRAFT out of the state of Ohio end up being top recruits for programs like Michigan and Wisconsin. Tressel picks and chooses who he wants to come and play for him from Glenville and Bedford and wherever else, and mixes in a top recruit or three from Florida or Texas, and he has a top 3 recruiting class without doing any work at all.
Tressel has no excuse for losing a game, ever. He's a great coach, but I dont think that you can call him the best just because he wins a bunch. I doubt he'd enjoy the same success if he was the coach at a place like Michigan State or Northwestern or even Iowa. He's a product of the system.
