I've been doing a study. Well, not a scientific study anyway, but a study nonetheless. It seems that every morning I wake up with a song in my head. Yes, every morning. I have tracked these songs over the last few days and have found that I am indeed weird and quite possibly retarded.
Here's why.
Tuesday October 31. Halloween.
The alarm clock goes off at eight A.M. I get up out of bed, knowing I have to get ready for work. I hate working Sundays, but it is a part of what I do. As I get up and wander to the bathroom for my daily constitutional, my brain starts a tune.
"Catholic girls
With a tiny little mustache
Catholic girls
Do you know how they go?
Catholic girls
In the rectory basement
Father rileys a fairy
But it dont bother mary"
Yes, that's right. Frank Zappa has been residing in my head this particular morning. As I reach the bathroom, I sing this song in my head.
"Catholic girls
At the CYO
Catholic girls
Do you know how they go?
Catholic girls
There can be no replacement
How do they go, after the show?"
Throughout my morning routine I embrace the frivolity of "Catholic Girls." I can't seem to shake the tune that has imbedded itself in my brain. Instead of fighting it, I go with it and, while showering, I belt out the rest of the song, doing my best Zappa/Sinatra to this verse:
"All the way
Thats the way they go
Every day
And none of their mamas ever seem to know
Hip-hip-hooray
For all the class they show
Theres nothing like a catholic girl
At the CYO
When they learn to blow...
They're learning to blow
All the catholic boys!"
Needless to say, the rest of the day was trudged through with a complete history of Frank Zappa tunes, "Catholic Girls" being the main part of the soundtrack.
Wednesday November 1
This is where things get a little strange.
I get up at six A.M. to get the kids ready for school and be on my way to work. Halfway through my shower I realize that I am singing, not humming, but singing this:
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows."
I try desperately to nip this in the bud. To stop it in it's tracks as if I had just put a bullet through Rudolph's shiny little schnozz. But to no avail. it just keeps on going and going as if Rudolph has eaten the energizer bunny for breakfast and snorted a couple of lines of crystal meth with his coffee.
"All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games."
I find myself entertaining thoughts of suicide as I hum this tune right through lunchtime and into the afternoon. Even as I turn the radio in my Jeep up and listen to "White Zombie," the tune of "Rudolph" pervades everything. Imagine "Rudolph" sung to the tune of "Black Sunshine."
You would want to kill yourself too.
Thursday November 2
Again up at six for the kids and for work. I have a feeling this day will be different. It is. I have a monster guitar riff going off in my head and I recognize it immediately. It puts a huge smile on my face and I know exactly where it came from.
"Well I don't know where they come from
But they sure do come
I hope they comin' for me
And I don't know how they do it
But they sure do it good
I hope they doin' it for free"
Syracuse University played Cincinatti the other day and this is the song they play during kickoffs. I heard it during the game, playing in the background. I love Ted Nugent. Always have. I sang it aloud during the whole trip to drop the kids off at school.
"They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever
The first time that I got it
I was just ten years old
I got it from some kitty next foor
I went and see the Dr. and
He gave me the cure
I think I got it some more
They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever"
The kids finally found out that their old man was going crazy. They couldn't wait to get out of the car.
Pantera does a nice rendition of that song by the way. Just thought you should know.
Friday November 3. Today.
I had a strange dream last night. I dreamt that I was at my in-laws house. Strange enough, you might say, but it gets better. It was baseball season and it was time for the annual tournament. I was in charge of the tournament and it seems I had dropped the ball on organization. I was late with all the preparation and by the time I realized it, the tournament was over. All the communities involved were pissed at me and the tournament was a complete shambles. I felt ridiculously stupid and woke up with a feeling of dread, knowing that I had let everybody in four communities down.
I woke up to this:
"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."
Yes. The age old standard. The song every baseball fan lives by and hears during every game.
Cruel and ironic considering my dream.
Nonetheless, it put me in a good mood once I realized that it was only a dream. You see, I am psychotic about preparation for my tournaments. My psyche must have been working overtime last night.
The song is still in my head as I type this.
Everybody.....sing along!
What song was in your head this morning?

"Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.
Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight."

I'm good with this.
********
Someone oughta do a top 100 list of pre-1980 songs. There were tons of 'em.
Good ones, that is, if you filter out the Disco...

There was once a local hero called The Charleston Charger. He was just vicious when it came to fighting bad guys. Well one day, someone got curious about his origin.
"So why do you call yourself the Charleston Charger? Is that where you grew up?"
"That's not really my name."
"What?"
"My name is actually the Charles In Charger."
"...What!?"
"Yeah, I've had that stupid song stuck in my head since the show was canceled."
"...Dude, that was like fifteen years ago!"
"I know. Beating people up is the only thing that distracts me from it."

Dodge Swinger 1973, Galaxy 500,
All the way stars' green, gotta go.
Dodge Swinger 1973, top down, chassis low,
Panel dim, light drive, Jesus on the dashboard.
T-minus whenever it feels right, Galaxy 500.
Planets align, a king is born.
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Dodge Swinger 1973, top down, chassis free,
Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong, or maybe just me.
Don't worry, it's coming.
Don't worry, it's coming.
Jesus on the dashboard.
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
I turn on the radio.
Hey kid, are you going my way?
Hop in, we'll have ourselves a field day.
We'll find us some spacegrass,
Lay low, watch the universe expand.
Skyway, permanent Saturday.
Oh, by the way, Saturn is my rotary.
Hop in, it'll be eternity
Till we make it to M83.
Once around the Sun, cruising, climbing.
Jupiter cyclops winks at me, yeah, he knows who's driving.
Hit neutral in the tail of a comet.
Let the vortex pull my weight.
Push the seat back a little lower.
Watch light bend in the blower.
Planets align.
A king is born.
Dodge Swinger.
Jesus on the dashboard.
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right
Whenever it feels right

Always a pleasure.
I don't really know you TL, but I thought of you the other day.
A buddy of mine and I were driving around at a place where we used to hunt, checking out places for deer and what not. I never noticed one of the tiny side roads that we used to cross when we hunted years ago.
Tiger Lily Lane.
I would have snapped a picture if I were a camera wielding kind of guy.

Said the man
Who feel him a fool
For he be the wiseman
For the man
Who don't think he's a fool he
Control his destiny
But he's too cool for himself
For himself
For himself
All i need
Is something to keep me movin' on
In a world
Where violence reigns
And everybody seems so strange to me
Said the man
Who feel him a fool
For he be the wise man
For the man
Who dont feel him a fool he
Control his destiny
Yeah he's too cool for himself
For himself
For himself
Ohhhh ohhh ohhhh oh
This weapon of destruction
Swallows peoples suffering
And no confusion
You aint winnin' if your losin'
We don't need
Said the man
Who feel him a fool he
For he be the wiseman
For the man
Who don't think he's a fool he
Control his destiny

The same song that's been in my head all fucking week:
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world
