I have a long standing hate of religion. The main reason for my hate is the obscene hypocrisy that is practiced by every religion especially Christianity. I am not an atheist nor am I agnostic in fact I believe that there is a god> a creator, and I believe that whoever or whatever god is "he" also has contempt for religion.
The pope recently quoted the bible in relation to Islamic religious practices and beliefs. Well it sandpapered the asses of Islamic believers to the point where the pope needed to speak out on his comment. So after a week of pressure, the pope apologized for his statement. The apology was not what I took issue with, it was the part of the popes statement where he claimed he did not necessarily personally agree with what the ancient scriptures expressed about Islam.
So here is the hypocrisy in action: Christianity is based on the bible being the inerrant, inspired word of god.
So what the pope is saying is that he does not agree with god.
Perhaps god was wrong in this particular instance?

If you don't understand nor have the information to properly and intelligently comment....don't. If you want to know find out. Also, he did not apologize for his statement, he said he was sorry that they interpreted what he said in the manner in which they did.

The news report I listened to explained that the popes controversial quote was from the bible. I did not research the story, I just reacted to what I heard as it did not seem too far fetched. However, now that a few people in this thread have stated that it was ancient byzantine propaganda I suppose I will believe that as well and not research it.

Of course once again they proved that they are a religion of peace by reacting violently to some verbal insult. Idiots, the lot of them.

Christians? i'll take a Christian over a Muslim any day. they are both nuts, but at least Christians stopped using violence years ago. i don't see that happening in the foreseeable future for Islam. talk about some dumbass motherfuckers... "the pope offends us by saying we use violence to make our point. let's kill some people and make some threats in opposition!"
anyway, i think all religion is stupid. i don't believe in a creator, either. some guys here in Chicago already proved that organic material can be created from a few basic elements which were present trillions of years ago before there was life.
fuck those coward Muslim extremists. they aren't man enough to fight me man to man. they tried to use explosives and bullets when i was in Iraq. it's pure cowardice. will no one challenge hidden101 to a battle of honor?

Hey I was wondering if someone could post some kind of generalized statement on Uber tomorrow. Can someone please get on that?
I don't enjoy the Catholic religion myself. I can say this because I grew up Catholic. But you can like me, because I know better now. Everyone is a hypocrite. Everyone. It doesn't matter what race, religion, sexual orientation or Ubersite average post rating you have. Hypocrites = everyone.
I will also note that I find it entertaining when a group of Christians feel like they have nothing better to do than to complain about gays and things of this nature. Honestly...God loves everyone the last I checked. Haven't talked to Him in awhile, but like I said, last I checked He wouldn't like people to walk around hating others, etc. If a particular Christian's thought is that being gay is a sin, then they should also be looking at themselves. Got news for ya: everyone sins. These are the kind of Christians that turn people off to Christianity.
The last paragraph was brought to you by a stupid news report I watched earlier today.

The Pope didn't quote the Bible, he quoted an obscure 14th century Byzantine emperor. Hardly what Catholics consider to be the "inerrant, inspired word of God."

I think it is probably safe to say that the pope benedict is far more educated than any user on this websight. I'm not saying that as in insult, this is just a very learned man.
His speech was to a bunch scientists and explored the impact that greek philosophy had on christianity, the application of reason to religious thought, the eventual formation of the character of christianity and of european states.
The quotes that are in the news which he used were things written directly by a 14th century emporer, who himself believed that some islamic teachings were contrary to reason, in that they promoted to spread religion by violence. This emporer, being influenced by greek philosophy, believed this to be contrary to reason, and that is why he disagreed with it.
taken out of the context of this very specific speech, it all sounds rather sinister. but, not everything we say relates to everything else happening in the world.
When writing a lecture on such a specific set of ideas, I think quoting from the time period and views of various people in history is not at all unreasonable.
This was a stupid thing for the media to snatch up and blow apart

It's pretty stupid to quote some Byzantine guy and then say you don't necessarily agree with what was in the quote. Why quote it then? And why, if you are Islamic, would you listen to a speech by the Pope? I don't get the whole thing.
I visited Rome this summer and the Vatican was all decked out in marble and hand painted crap and woodwork and gilded and shit. Then I went over to the Colleseum and it didn't have any marble left where the seats had been because it was all stolen to build the Vatican. Bitches. That's just dumb.
Conclusion: Religion is retarded.

In quoting the statement that has caused all this shit, the Pope was ACTUALLY trying to make a larger point, which he more fully stated towards the end of the "academic" speech. The point was that there should be no room in the heart of the truly religious individual for violence, be it christianity or islam or anything else.
I think religion is just as dopey as the next guy, but this is a good example of Islam once again taking shit too seriously to the point of violence....like with the cartoons.

i can't tell if you're differentiating between individuals in christianity and the actual tenets itself. i doubt you are, but the pope's an asshole and i agree with that part. i also agree the catholic church horrible for jesus' reputation.

It sounds pretty lame for him to suddenly claim that he was quoting someone else in the speech though. I haven't seen the full quote but he's an idiot if he was surprised that calling Islam evil and inhumane wasn't going to set them off.
