The final chapter of The Malleys Part Four.
See bottom of the post for GrowingFamily info.
Iggy Ciceri walked up the front porch of his brother Paul's house, being true to his promise to take care of his sister-in-law while Paul was in hiding. Paul's daughter was out at a friend's house for the night, and Theresa Ciceri was most likely still asleep.
As Iggy put the key into the lock, his eyes drifted downwards to a crumpled body on the porch, and Iggy stifled a scream. His brother Pauldeadshoton the porch, blood running down through the slats everywherebloodeverywhere.
Paul's handsome face was blasted apart by a bullet hole above his left eye, dried blood covering the eyeball and all across the forehead. Another bullet had shattered Paul's jaw, breaking his teeth off everywhere and ripping through his spinal cord.
"No, Paul...Paul...you okay?" Iggy said, leaning down to Paul's body. "Paul? What did dey do to you, Paul? What did dat Michael do to you?"
"Uncle Iggy!" called Emily, running down the block; she was fourteen, and Paul's only daughter. "Uncle Iggy, did you find Daddy?"
"Why you running through a city like Clifton by you'self, girl?" Iggy said, trying to stall her.
"I'm only not supposed to walk through Clifton at night," Emily said jubilantly, walking up the steps. "Did you find Daddy?"
"No! Wait!" Iggy said, putting up his hands. "Let me see you build a snowman first, go 'round the back and find me some sticks, we're gonna build a good snowman, right?"
"Sure," Emily said, looking suspicious but happy. As she disappeared around the back, Iggy knocked on the door furiously. It opened, and Theresa Ciceri stood in the frame.
"Iggy, hello, I'm glad you're here," Theresa said happily. "It's cold, step out ofwhat?"
Iggy pointed to the body of her husband on the porch floor, covering his face with his hands. Theresa let out a low, long moan, a sound that broke Iggy's heart.
"Paul...Paul..." Theresa cried, holding Paul's body and touching the hole in his head. She always knew this day would come, but it killed her nonetheless. "Paul...I love you, Paul, I love you so much...Paul..."
"I'll go distract the kids so's dey don't see dis," Iggy said, his face red with tears and anger. "And I'll make some phone calls to people high up. I'm so sorry, Theresa."
Iggy went inside, leaving Paul's wife by herself on the cold porch. Theresa could barely process the words as she looked down at her husband's face, unable to bear the fact that he was dead. But he was...Paul Ciceri was dead.
* * *
Dear John,
I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry for Petroso, for Ciceri, and for failing you most of all, my boss, my friend. I did something bad today, John. Tell Iggy and Dane and his wife that I'm sorry, but it was me or him, and it hurt me to do it. I loved Paul, with all my heart, and would rather have died a thousand deaths (illegible)
Don't hate me, John. I'm going into hiding again, but please forgive me, and I'll be back after the New Year. I'll keep in contact. John, I'm sorry for what you have to deal with my problems, but please, please, please don't give me away to anyone. Be safe, and I'm sorry.
Sincerely,
Michael James Brecher
"That piece of shit," Virgil O'Duinen breathed slowly. "That dirty rat..."
"Michael," John Malley hissed in fury. "You...just..."

Paul Ciceri's funeral wasn't a pleasant affair. People from both families, and all over, came to pay their respects to an honorable man, and one who had died unfairly. John Malley and his wife and kids attended, as well as Virgil O'Duinen. Also, Virgil Jr. had been released from pending trial for Christmas due to lack of evidence, and he stood by his father in place of his wounded brother.
John Broadus was personally escorting John Malley around, while Alex Collins kept watch on the door. Carmine Galantro and John exchanged bitter glances throughout the funeral services, as did Dane and Iggy Ciceri. Paul's first wife Devon didn't come to the funeral, which only inflamed tensions.
At the dark, ice-cold burial in Jersey City, Carmine confronted John, something John had been waiting for all day. Standing with the two Ciceris, PJ Porcelli, and Sylvester Augusto, Carmine asked for a word with John in between the fields of graves.
"I'm all ears," John replied, the two Virgils and Broadus backing him up.
"Listen, play dumb, or do whatever the fuck you want, but Michael's not getting out of this one alive," Carmine said angrily. "Petroso's deadwhatever, I can write that off for the sake of peace, but now Paul Ciceri? Michael's gotta go."
"You know dat Michael Brecher left Paul's body on his porch, his head blown apart, so his wife and kids would see it?" Iggy said, his mouth sour.
"I didn't know that," John said blandly.
"Well I do, considering I'm the one who discovered Paul lying there," Iggy replied bitterly.
"Give us time to think," John said. "I know I've asked for a lot, but we still don't know too well where Michael is."
"Bullshit, John. Either you find him, or we do. And it's going to be a hell of a lot more unpleasant when we find the motherfucker," Dane Ciceri spat.
"We'll talk about this soon," John said, turning to leave.
"He killed my father too," PJ Porcelli growled. "That whole fucking family is down the tubes."
"I'm gonna go Tuesday night," Iggy vowed. "They're getting shipments by the Meadowlands. Me and dad, we're gonna go and find Brecher, and drag him behind our fuckin' cars."
"If you're going, I'm going too," PJ Porcelli agreed.
"All right..." Carmine said, hesitantly. "Sylvester, just watch over them. Just take out Brecher, no one else."
"Of course," Sylvester said, nodding.
"This is turning into a fucking shitstorm," Carmine breathed uncertainly as they laid Paul's coffin down.

It was an unusually warm night, and outside Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Teaneck, Michael Brecher made his way in for the Winter Concert. He was dressed in a heavy coat, trying not to be seen, something he was particularly good at.
"Fall on your knees, and hear the angels' voices," came the high voices of the 7th-grade choir, including Sue-Sue Brecher. Michael walked into the crowded, dimly-lit auditorium, and found his wife, and the seat she had saved.
"O night divine, O night when Christ was born."
"What took so long?" Joanne asked, kissing Michael as he took a seat.
"Trying not to be seen, did I miss anything?"
"Not yet," Joanne replied. "Sue-Sue's coming up."
Michael watched up on stage, as different 7th-graders took on short solos. His beautiful Susan's turn came, and she opened her mouth and sang:
"A thrill of hope, a weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn."
Michael relaxed in his seat, confidence and love once again welling in his frail heart. The night was beautiful and pure, and nothing bad could happen, and nothing could go wrong.
* * *
In a small clearing in the southern part of Ridgefield Park, just at the junction of the Overpeck and Hackensack Rivers that same night, John Malley pulled a pickup truck up, readying to load smuggled cigarettes in. John Broadus and Don McMichael were inside a large white truck, rooting through the illegally-gained material.
"Let's get a move on, it's starting to rain," John Malley called out. "Is Virgil here?"
"Yeah, Virgil and his son are down by the river watching out for police," Don McMichael replied. Somewhere close, a car drew closer, its engine loud. The car emerged into view and drew into the clearing thirty feet away from the truck, its occupants stepping out of the car.
John looked out at the newcomers; Iggy and Dane Ciceri walked out of the car, drawing their guns, and John's blood ran cold. "Watch out!" John yelled, but it was too late.
Dane fired over the hood of his car, bullets shattering the windows of John's car, and Iggy fired into the open door of the massive truck, screaming something about his brother.
"Help me!" John cried, sinking low in his seat to avoid the whistling bullets spray glass into his hair. Outside, Iggy turned around, pistol out and aiming at John's car, eager to take the blood of John Malley.
John Broadus emerged from the truck and shot Iggy from behind, spraying blood from his shoulder. Iggy dropped his pistol and fell to the ground, moaning in pain, his arm wrecked. From the road where Dane Ciceri continued to pepper the ground with bullets, another car drove up, discharging its occupants - Sylvester Augusto and PJ Porcelli.
"Sylvester, help us," John Malley called out.
"Give us Michael Brecher," Sylvester replied, his voice weary, clasping a shotgun in his hands while crouching behind the car. "Just give us Brecher, John, and we'll leave. We know he's here."
"Guys, we don't have Brecher" Don McMichael pleaded, stepping out from behind the truck. PJ Porcelli raised his gun over the hood of the car and opened fire; John moaned as bullets thudded into McMichael's stomach, and cringed as McMichael fell to the ground screaming.
"No..." Iggy Ciceri said, lying on the ground under Broadus. John Broadus slid a knife between Iggy's ribs, straight into his heart.
"You killed my father, John," Porcelli cried, emerging from behind the car with his pistol out. "John, you killed him when he was defenseless. I told you I'd haunt you, John."
On the muddy, bloody ground, Donald McMichael leveled his shotgun at Porcelli, four bullets in his stomach. Consciousness fading, McMichael pulled the trigger, sending an arc of shot into the side of Porcelli's head, wetting the ground with blood.
"There's nowhere to run, John," Dane Ciceri called, firing across the hood of his car with Sylvester. It was two on two now, Broadus and Malley dared not stick their heads above the car hood to fire back. The bodies of Iggy Ciceri and Donald McMichael lay motionless.
"We're comin' for you, John!" yelled the voice of Virgil O'Duinen, and John's heart rose. With guns blazing, Virgil and Christopher O'Duinen burst through the trees on the flank of the Ciceri car, running up from the Overpeck.
Sylvester Augusto armed and fired his shotgun, smashing Christopher in the chest and bringing him to the ground. Virgil fired wildly, striking Sylvester's arm, only to be laid low with a bullet from Dane Ciceri. The bullet had ricocheted and shattered off Virgil's firearm, and grazed against his side.
Unrelenting but weaponless, Virgil grabbed a wrench from the ground and threw it with all his strength at Sylvester's head. Sylvester fell on his back, groaning in pain, floating in the thin, watery mud.
"Dad..." Christopher sighed, holding out his gun. Virgil crawled through the mud as the rain intensified, seizing the gun from his son, and turning to fire into Sylvester's chest. Sylvester gave a small jerk, and went limp. Cold hatred encompassing his mind, Virgil tipped Sylvester over so that his face lay in the water, bubbles rising from the surface. Gunfire echoing all around, Virgil slammed the wrench into the back of Sylvester's head.
"Sylvester's down," John Malley said, concentrating on keeping alive. "I think Dane's left,"
"Be careful," John Broadus replied, calmly and certainly. "Aim for his trunk, and I'll aim for his head."
"Guys, quit!" Dane Ciceri said, throwing his gun over the hood of the car, and sounding more and more like an old man and less of a mobster. "Guys, I surrender."
Virgil knelt by his son as Malley and Broadus walked over to where Dane Ciceri crouched, their guns out. Malley stayed back, uncertain of what would happen next; Broadus walked forward, turning around the car and looking down at the huddled form of Dane Ciceri. John Broadus lashed out, kicking Ciceri in the face and stomping on his ribs as he lay prone.
"Stop it, John," John Malley said, walking around the car hood. He looked disgusted as Broadus backed away from Dane Ciceri. Ciceri looked weary, old, like the aging man that he was. A pang of sadness flashed through John Malley's heart, and he so heartily wanted to let Dane live, to see his grandchildren once more.
Pushing away his emotions, John Malley leveled his .45 and shot Dane through the head. Dane slumped over to his side, falling onto the muddy ground. Gunsmoke filled the air, and their ears echoed with the noise of the gunshots.
"Donald," Virgil said, his face contorted in sadness, but refusing to cry. "Did they get ye, Donald?"
"Call 911," Broadus said shakily. "It was self-defense, we need to get these two to the hospital."
On the ground, Christopher O'Duinen fell out of consciousness, a double-barreled shotgun wound to the chest; Don McMichael was flickering in and out of lucidity. He was in the mud on a rainy December night...he was in the back of a truck, doctors around him...a white room, more doctors and surgeons looking at his bullet-riddled body...he fell asleep.

Mob Massacre Mystifies Police
Ridgefield ParkYesterday night, an alleged gun battle between two separate factions of the New Jersey Mafia left four dead and at least two wounded, shattering the peace of what is normally a crime-free town. Julianne Roberts, our police correspondent, was one of the first to arrive on the gruesome scene in south Ridgefield Park, by the Overpeck River.
"There were bodies lying all on the ground," said Julianne. "It was just truly a brutal sight."
The three remaining unharmed men are local New Jersey residents; John Malley of Ridgewood, Virgil O'Duinen of Lincoln Park, and Donald McMichael of Lyndhurst. All three of them were taken in for questioning by the police, and later, the FBI. It is alleged that they acted in self defense against an attack in the ongoing war between a rival gang.
"It's sickening that in today's society people still solve their differences by"
Carmine Galantro folded the paper, downcast. John Malley had never felt so awkward in his life, looking at Galantro's expression as he realized four of his best friends would never be returning. John and Carmine sat alone in a private chamber in a Jersey City office, reviewing the events.
"Dane, Sylvester, PJ, and Iggy," Galantro repeated, as he had done over and over again. "Dane, Sylvester, PJ, and Iggy...what is my family without them?"
"Carmine..." John started, trying to say something. "I didn't want this, you know I didn't."
"You win, John," Carmine choked, putting down the paper. "You win, whatever you want. My family is broken. At least admit this is what you wanted, John. The leadership is gone, all my men of honor."
John knew that the Dimiglio family was hopelessly broken, but hated to think of himself as having done it.
"Carmine, if there's anything I can do..."
"You've done enough, John," Carmine said, his eyes bleary. "Just leave, and leave my family alone. I don't need help from you."
"I'm sorry," John said weakly, loathing himself for what he was trying to apologize for.
"It doesn't matter."

Agents Adam Ross and Frank Fiumfreddo stood on the corner of Hackensack's Main Street as the clocks rotated into 2006, awaiting their prize. He came soon enough, walking down the road, sunglasses and a heavy jacket on, remaining inconspicuous.
"So, you're the gentleman in question," Agent Ross said delightfully.
"I can't handle it any more," the man said. "I need to get out, with my family."
"The witness protection program would be more than happy to remove you to somewhere less threatening," said Agent Ross with a smile. "Iowa, Montana, Oregon...you're sure you want to do this? You'd have to testify against the Sullivan family."
"Anything, I need to get out," said the man quickly.
"Mr. Brecher, your government thanks you," Agent Fiumfreddo said. "We'll definitely be keeping in touch. You collect enough evidence for us, you might be able to enter the program by next New Year."
Michael Brecher nodded, silent.
"You're doing the right thing, Michael," said Agent Ross. "It's the right thing for your family. Not the family, your family."
"What do you want me to do?" Michael asked.

Umm shouldnt that third man be John Broadus not Donald McMichael? Didn't Don catch some bullets in the chest?
Great post...

Oops, oh yeah, that should be Broadus, good eye. Chrissy O'Duinen was wounded with a shotgun, and Don McMichael is in a coma in Hackensack Medical Center. The last six chapters will be violent...

pfffft, dude, i got expelled my senior year of high school for "computer hacking" just because i took over their shitty Novell network and locked out the admins and the cops were reading out of some book about computer crimes (this was when it was still quite new) and how i had commited three felonies.
yeah right. it was no big deal.
anyway, they can't do shit to you. you didn't commit any crimes. you didn't agree to any terms of service on the baby site and they allowed annonymous posting. it's their fault, you did nothing wrong. if you were to go to court for it, even a baby sympathizing judge and jury couldn't find you guilty.

I realize that 'any more' would have been one word if you were actually leaving, but yeah, that's the impression that came across.

You're leaving because Bart deleted your post?
-------
No.
I'm not posting the baby screencaps Method and I took, because they'll get deleted as well. I'm posting non-baby material from here on out.
