Everyone has their own opinions on music. Something you may find to be incredible, I'll think is the most horrible thing ever recorded. Right after politics and religion, music can spark some of the most heartfelt and violent arguements. Here on Uber, there seems to be a lot of Classic Rock Junkies and Death Metal Freaks. (The DMFs will hate this post.) However, probably the only thing we can all agree on is that Phill Collins is a little bit of "Teh Ghey."

This is for all the Classic Rock Junkies out there.

Classic Rock Junkies are interesting. Many of them honestly believe the year 1980 was when the music really died. Thanks to various bands that achieved fame in the last twenty-six years, they refuse to admit that ANY good music has been created recently. Strangely, in most cases, this means most of their own lifetimes. What they don't realize is that there is a ton of music coming out that MTV would never play because the average sixteen year old blond white girl wouldn't give a shit.

Below are a few bands making music right now, that in some way, have a certain ethos reminiscent of a bygone era. These bands all make music that captures a feel of true musicianship and sincerity. Maybe you disagree... if so how about you explain why along with your negative reviews...

MOGWAI
A strange, ethereal band out of the United Kingdom, Mogwai is a member of the so-called "Post-rock" movement, whatever that means, along with such bands as Sigur Ros and Godspeed You Black Emperor. They create epic length songs, rarely with any singing, instead using rich textures and building tensions to tell a story. Such albums as "Happy Songs For Happy People" , "Rock Action" , and "My Father, My King" have slowly gathered sale numbers in the US and they recently performed live at the BBC with an album released of the show shortly after. I suggest downloading the following songs to see if this atmospheric music is right for you... "Two Rights Make One Wrong" , "Sine Wave" and "Hunted By A Freak."

THE MARS VOLTA
Once there was a great neo-punk band called At The Drive In. They broke up and have the band became the bland emo group called Sparta. The rest went on to do something else entirely new. A review from some magazine that I can't remember said once that this band sounded like what would happen "... If Pink Floyd had kids that were into punk, but they were all Mexican instead of British." Um, okay! Unbelievably weird, with time signatures that make your head hurt, this is a band that other musicians listen to. With their two CDs "De-Loused In The Comatorium" and "Frances The Mute," they have gained a huge indie following. To see if you would join that following, I suggest downloading these songs... "Inertiatic ESP" , "This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed" and L'Via L'Viaquez."

WOLFMOTHER
This Australian trio have decided to march straight back into bluesmetal, just as their forefather did in Led Zeppelin decades ago. Singer Andrew Stockdale has somehow created a vocal style halfway between Robert Plant and AC/DC's Brian Johnson. The guitars howl and the drums are beat upon in the most aggressive manner possible. So far, they only have a difficult to find EP and a self-titled LP, just released. Hell, even the lyrics are out there, as in these songs I suggest for download... "Woman" , "White Unicorn" and "Pyramid."

COHEED AND CAMBRIA
There are many bands that say they have been influenced by the great Canadian group Rush. Few bands can lay claim to being the next Rush. C&C may have started out with punk roots but they have jumped headlong into the realm of Prog-Rock. One of the best things is seeing the massively furry singer, Claudio Sanchez, up on stage singing in a voice that one can only assume is being directly channeled from Geddy Lee himself. Album titles have ranged from "Second Stage Turbine" innocently enough, to "In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3" and most recently "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume 1: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness." WTF!!!!! Okay, just go download these songs... "Cuts Marked In The March Of Men" , "Welcome Home" and "The Suffering."

MURDER BY DEATH
A ridiculous name for one of the most incredible and underrated bands I've ever come across. This five piece group is filled with mystery and only recently allowed their photos to be taken. Subtle and dark, they evoke a feeling not often captured, let alone recognized by many modern musicians. Their first album, "Like The Exorcist, But More Breakdancing" was a collection of beautiful tunes, their meaning hidden among abstract lyrics swirling around melodies that didn't fit. With their second, "Who Will Survive and What Will Become Of Them?" the band created a full tale about the Devil coming to visit a small town in the desert of the southwestern United States. Horns, violins and piano are attacked along side the typical rock instruments while the vocalist weaves his way inside you. I recommend these songs for download... "I'm Afraid Of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolfe" , "Three Men Hangin'" and "You Are The Last Dragon."

MUSE
This British trio has taken guitar rock to the next level. Matthew Bellamy sounds like a more macho Thom Yorke (Radiohead) all while doing impressive things on his six string and occasionally tossing it aside for some keyboard work. The album "Showbiz" put their name out there, but with the release of "Absolution" they secured a place among the modern greats. The music is organic and vivid, giving itself over to a very live feel. And I've seen them live - they pull it off with great success. If you want to hear some of the best rock coming out of the UK right now, download these tracks... "Time Is Running Out" , "Hysteria" and "Butterflies And Hurricanes."

I just walked home from work and I couldn't stop thinking about how god awful this post is. Just because you saw the words 'Explosions in the Sky' on your hipster friend's iPod doesn't mean you know about music. Downloading 'Young Team' on soulseek doesn't mean you know about music. If this post started and stopped with mogwai I'd have let it slide because mogwai is pretty good. But then you wrote 'Once there was a great neo-punk band called At The Drive In' and that's when I knew I had to step in and strike a blow for good taste.

At The Drive In was ehh (and not the good sort of ehh either, the bad sort). The Mars Volta is shit coated shit. Coheed and Cambria has actually produced the occasional catchy if forgetable song, but mostly, they suck. Muse is ehh.

And for fucks sake I can not stress this enough: don't compare Muse to Radiohead. I honestly can't figure out how you managed to come up with that one. I mean I literally don't understand how you could have brought your fingers to type those letters out. I told my fingers a long time ago that if I ever tried to do something like that they should just bugger it all and stage a military coup. Power to the people and all that bit. But seriously, I'd like to hunt down your mother and punch her in the tits.

_____________________

There is next to no good music that has come out recently. I listen to primarily bands formed during the late 60s/early 70s. Any 80s music I have is probably by these bands, because they sound like 70s rock, instead of the shrill, synthesized drum sounds of the 80s.

The only current band I frequently listen to is System Of A Down. A fair chunk of their songs are thrashing and very simple (I believe Daron Malakian detunes his guitar to open B minor or a B fifth or something), but somehow I like it, and their less hard material really appeals to me too - Serj Tankian's voice is pretty soothing when he isn't screaming.

-2 Because you just compared Muse to Radiohead.

I'd give more -'s for liking The Mars Volta but uber doesn't support that.

Coheed and Wolfmother are the only ones on that list even worth talking about and they are marginal at best.

Just because you can sound like old school rock doesn't mean you are
==========
badass- None of these sound like old school rock, and I think that's the point. Some of today's new bands are tomorrow's classics.

Also, +2 Mars Volta.

==================

I seriously doubt it, if we could go forward in time from today to 10 years from now I bet not one of these bands will be around or even remembered. And you know why, because they're all the same regurgitated (i'm not sure how to spell that) rock and rock and the only cool new thing they are adding is some homogay dude on the vocals. If I have to listen to one more of these fucks whining in a heavy metal song I'm...well...I might cut myself or some other stupid trendy thing.

If you want good rock and roll, stuff that is coming out today you could listen to the new Tool like I am now (hello all you Tool haters =) or some white stripes or Avenged Sevenfold or Clutch or Audioslave or countless other bands that really play rock and roll. Today's music is a fad much like most music, you think in the 70's there werent thousands of bands you or I never heard of? Or the 80's hairbands we never heard of or the 90's grunge bands.

Every genre has bands that people think will transcend the era but in reality they don't or I should say very few do.

There may be some good music coming from some of these new bands...but it's not my style nor will it be a style that will withstand the test of time.

I've only REALLY listened to Coheed and Cambria and Muse.

Muse, despite their love of whining like tantruming, castrated, retarded children, I can actually handle.

I heard one song by Coheed and Cambria, and by the time it was a quarter of the way done, I looked up to see some fucktard dancing like he was on LSD at Woodstock. Then, I turned around to see a poster with a picture of the lead singer.

After that I decided I hate Coheed and Cambria.

I know I wasn't really taking the music into consideration, but I still have to fight the urge to jack off all over a Volkswagon at the sight of a Blue Spruce.

Cap. Thorns - Genesis was only good back in the day, and that was only because of the awesomeness of Peter Gabriel. I had the chance to see PG live a few years back, 17th row, and it was one of the most amazing concerts I've ever been to. His head was shaved and he grew out a long grey beard. The entire band dressed like the were from "The Matrix," and the stage transformed after every other song.

FoolProof - I absolutely love Bad Religion. I got hooked on them when "Stranger Than Fiction" came out. Went back and got "No Control" and "Recipe For Hate." I also saw them live, 2nd row, and got the shit kicked out of me by rabid fans half my age. It was a blast!

Stagger Lee - I'm still not really sure how I feel about Wolfmother. There's a reason they have the shorter paragraph on this post. I included them, only because they have such a retro feel, and I think a lot of people would appreciate that sound. Australia is putting out that retro vibe right now. Look at Jet. I fucking hate Jet...

+2 for actually providing useful info on this stuff. I've heard of 4 out of these 6 bands, and heard music from 3 of them. I have to admit, though, that most of Coheed's non-radio stuff is hard for me to get into. Part of that might be the fact that their songs are all one long story spanning all their albums.

::shrugs::

This is where I type a generic statement about how my band is gonna be the next big thing in rock music. So there you go.
