It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives that protester the freedom he abuses to burn that flag.

He has half a point, there bart. Soldiers are not responsible FOR freedom of speech, they are responsible for maintaing the state of freedom of speech desired by the government.
Half a point. The quote is still stupid.

This is the dumbest quote I've ever read.
If soldiers are responsible for freedom of speech, then why don't China or Korea have the same freedoms? Because of the soldiers?
Stupid.
_____________________
I assume when you say "Korea" (though there's no real country called "korea"), you're talking about North Korea. A safe assumption because South Korea does have freedom of speech because of our soldiers. North Korea and China don't have freedom of speech BECAUSE THEY NEVER FOUGHT FOR IT. Hell, they fought against it. Read between the lines, genius, it's a quote about America and American soldiers.
The sad thing here is that you probably don't even possess the intelligence to feel stupid for such a dumb comment.

This was beautiful. A quote which comes to my mind on Independence Day is:
"That's what you get! Ha Ha! Look at you! Ya ship's all banged up! Who's the man? Huh? Who's the man? Wait till I get another plane! I'm a line ya friends up right beside you! Where ya at, huh? Where ya at? (PUNCH) Welcome to earth."
And I'm not even American. I'm just a global Patriot.
Mine wins.

yeah, i guess there was no need for the american revolution. we should have just asked the english to leave real nicely. and i guess we should have just nicely asked hitler to stop. yeah, that makes all kinds of sense.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That was a phenomenal use of capitalization there, you witless son of a slunt. Do yourself a favor, and learn to NOT insert your own interpretation of what you want someone to be saying. Read what is actually there for once.
Being thankful for the military and actions that keep our nation "free" does not mean we should parade it around as if it were a spectacle of pride. What our soldiers do, and the sacrifies they make, are not something to exalt and glorify; rather, they are things that nobody should be proud of, but must be done.
Before you go off on a tangent with that last line, tell me this: Have you ever killed somebody? Do you know the eternal guilt that settles on you, knowing that you snuffed another person's life, and they can never have it back? Until you do, don't presume to understand the emotions and reactions within a soldier. They may be proud of the overall goal achieved, but when it comes to killing other people, or destroying another person's home? They aren't proud of that, and the typical American reaction over their actions is improper.
Instead of glorifying something that should never have needed to happen in the first place, you should learn to simply be grateful of what they are doing so you don't have to. Not proud, for their is no pride in their business. Just thankful.

Perhaps, but that part in Fahrenheit 911 (yeah, I know, Michael Moore isn't reliable, but this is uncut footage) where the soldier is so sickeningly pleasured about playing that song by the bloodhound gang, let the motherfucker burn, burn motherfucker, burn, when they bomb Afghan cities, and he's just smiling dumbly, that was fucked up. Fubar.

actually, it is the intellectual who came up with the very notion of freedom of speech in the first place.

Whoo hoo! Let's suggest that fighting ultimately solves problems! That's the intelligent solution!
All this time, evolving and bettering ourselves, and we still can't find a better, more final answer than war. Do you even comprehend how pitiful that makes us, as a race of people?

One last comment.... I guarantee that you're not going to hurt my feelings, or any other soldier's feelings by insulting this post or quote. You will, however, single handedly remove any doubt anyone here has that you are anything but a complete jackass. Free speech is great, isn't it?
