"The only way to truly gain an edge on our domestic market is to see the world, and gain a holistic perspective of life lived by others."
I didn't buy it for one second.
"So you're telling me that I have orders to visit every continent, cataloguing every step, before I can return?"
Mr. Baum, my 'supervisor', simply responded with a cold "You leave tomorrow".
As I boarded my plane in JFK, I felt a cold chill run through my being. I had never flown international before, and was not too pleased at the prospect of experiencing the nuances of foreign countries.
To be honest, I was surprised at the levity I experienced on this trip. It seemed to be over as quickly as it started.
It was a whirlwind romance that took me swiftly through Africa and Asia. The Pacific left me breathless. South America gave me insight I never knew to exist.
I swam with the dolphins in the Aegean; I broke bread with the strange and unsavory.
I left thinking that I would never be happy, sent abroad to explore new parallels and add dimension to my growing perspective. I couldn't have been more wrong.
I quickly found that I mixed easily with others. I experienced things that I knew 'home' was most certainly craving.
I am to return just as Uncle Traveling Matt would from Fraggle Rock; a revered and mysterious icon full of tales and ideas from the dark unknown.
As cultured as I thought I was before, I now realize that I had only just begun.
I became innovative.
Now I am home, and through all of my travels I have found that this is where I have always belonged. Home had become more important to me after I experienced the wonders of the world, and all of the secrets of foreign lands.
The variety on this planet should be welcomed and appreciated completely. I may have been considered an ethno centrist before, but since have become a humble relativist.
I am now able to relate to all other kinds, openly inviting one and all to intermingle with me as seen fit.
I feel that with my extensive exposure to foreign tastes, I can now offer my own people the fruits of my labor.
I now come in eight great flavors.
