Well today is the third day since I have quit smoking. I never thought that it would be difficult because I have never been addicted to anything. Well little time has passed and I am already hurting. My friends and I went out to a bar last night and we sat outside in the smoking area on purpose. My buddy told me the more that I have to put up with will help, me out this soon in my goal. It will make everything else seem more "downhill". For all of you that smoke, know that when you drink it makes it like 10 times worse. I had to put up with that and everyone around me was smoking.
I have smoked for about 4 years now. I didnt want to end up like my grandfather and die of emphizema. I know that it usually takes years to die from smoking related incidents, but I think the sooner I stop the easier it will be. Truthfully I just stopped cold turkey and I have no idea what would help. I am not spending $50 on nicotine gum.... their is a chance that stuff wouldnt work and if it didnt I am out $50. This post may suck but its helping me out alittle..... Ahhh I need a drink!

New update... its been 2 weeks now , still hating it but still surviving. Almost gave in yesterday when I was drunk with a couple of asshole friends making bets to see who can get me to smoke again first. A couple tried to offer to cut me in on the winnings but I just want to see if I can really do it. Thanks for the advise all ... but cold turkey has worked so far.....
So Cal

The nicotine patch does help. It's worth the investment.

Good luck. They come in 3s. 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years, 3 anal rapings...huh?

I've never been a smoker (my head would probably implode if I tried), so I don't know if this translates. Guess we'll see...
I can't think of a good comparable substance, but when I want something I know I shouldn't have (umm...a coke? An entire cake? That $2500 mountain bike I want? I dunno...) I ask myself "Logically, what is the worst thing that can happen if I DON'T have it? Is something horrible going to happen to me?" The answer is always obviously no. As far as I know, no one's ever dropped dead from NOT having a cig? ;)
Huge huge luck to ya!

you're lame for quitting... you started for a reason. if it was worth doing it in the first place, then why quit? you may stop smoking cigarettes, but you will always be a cock smoker.

Thanks but i will never be fat. Its impossible, my motabolism is way to fast right now but maybe one day I could gain 50 more lbs. I dont think that cigs kill. Besides "guns don't kill people, people kill people." I dont focus on the broad view, if I was to die from smoking it would be a "smoking related incident." I just want to quit.

Smoking kills. Who came up with that? Smoking doesn't kill and that is a well known fact. Smoking may cause infections, aid in the occurence of cancer, it certainly creates a rather nasty breath. But, kill? When was the last time you saw someone die of a cigarette? There are plenty of reasons why smoking should be avoided: it creates an addiction, it is an expensive habit, it causes health problems . . . But, kill?
I am not implying that tobacco is good for anyone, although it does have its positive effects, especially once hooked to nicotine (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=npg&cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9551775&dopt=Abstract ). I am not postulating that smoking is a good habit, but I am tired of the war on tobacco. I have no sympathy for the tobacco industry, but I do believe the taxes I pay every time I buy cigarettes more than compensates for the health care I will receive years down the road. I am also quite tired of people who throw statistics at you as to imply a causal relationship of some "obviously" known fact. Here is a statistical fact for you:

Not to discourage, but after smoking for 10 years, the craving still does not go away. Being a strong willed person, I can see how all the weak people fail when they attempt to quit.
I found cold turkey was the best way. I bought a single pack of nico-gum, but did not follow their instructions. Whenever I got the urge while stressed and thought I was going to go postal, I chewed a piece.
The habit was easy to break, but I felt odd for a couple days. I always smoked while I drove and did not know what to do with my "smoking hand". The smoke while drinking and after meals. I have seen some people carry a fake cigarette to hold and puff, just a crutch.
The worst side effect I found was the loss of memory, more like intelligence. It seems nicotine becomes imbedded in your synapses in the brain. When you quit smoking, the links weaken or dissapate. Not unlike the way sugar rots the brain. I also gained 50 pounds in the first year.
Overall, I am glad I quit and I am much in much better health. Best of all I no longer suck the tobacco dick.

When I got myself off drugs the best thing I did was to hang out with the drug crowd and turn them down when offered.
Good for you for quitting. You'll feel much better in a few months.
Do what a freind of mine did; he knew he went throught three packs of smokes a week, so he took that money and gave it to his mom for safe keeping. At the end of his forst year, he saved enough money to put a cash payment down for a new truck. He gave the money to his mom so he wouldn't be tempted to go into the pot and use it elsewhere.

Gum ain't that great, patches sometimes work, but your best bet is a good friend for emotional support and physical restraint/abuse.

Thanks for the opinions, but I was only 18 when I started. The whole reason i ever tried it was peer pressure and I was finally old enough to do it, so why not try. I do regret it but all I can do now is improve myself. Everytime I think about having a ciggerette , I think about the comercial from the anti-tabacco people about how tabacco kills 1200 people a day, so why not take a day off. I thought it was pretty clever and true, so thats another reason I quit.

I'm just wondering, what makes someone want to start smoking in the first place? The only reason I could see is if someone was a dumbass teenager trying to be cool.
On a similar note, the anti-smoking campaign seems pointless. Sure, the smoking companies are evil and greedy. So is Microsoft. If an adult is too dumb to not realize the effects of smoking, then they deserve to die. As for kids, they won't listen to the commercials anyway.
I apologize if this seems ignorant of me. I don't personally know a lot of people who smoke.
