Lately I have been having some very strange dreams. They haven't been making much sense at all and some have been quite disturbing. After a particularly bizarre dream, which I shall shortly share with you, I decided I would do some deep thinking on dreams and try to determine what their purpose may be. I came to the conclusion that dreams are a form of defense mechanism.
I wake up one morning to find myself in an immense warehouse. I am resting on a generic mattress with no pillow or sheets. The room is devoid of any light source, slowly my eyes adjust to the darkness and the room begins to fill with light. All around me is a sea of generic mattresses and on every single mattress is a person. The room is full of every single person I have ever met, seen, spoken with, heard, etc . . . From time to time people would awake and sit up on their mattress. Whoever was awake would spend their waking hours seated on the mattress and conversing with those around them until they eventually just laid back down and slept some more. My dream ended as I slowly faded back into my slumber.
This dream has confounded me. Never before have I begun a dream by falling asleep in real life and waking up in the dream. Then it ended in the reverse, I fell asleep in my dream and woke up in real life. It was as if I had transitioned from life to dream and saw the transition. What does it mean? I do not know.
My theory on dreams is that they are a form of defense mechanism. It may seem ridiculous at first but go back to the first humans, what would they have dreamt about? Nowadays we are bombarded with so much information, sounds, tastes, smells, etc . . . that our minds have an almost limitless supply of material to fuel our dreams. Back when people were first roaming this earth things would have been much different. A caveman wouldn't dream about going to school naked or winning the lottery, those wouldn't have been in his mind's repertoire of dream material. Most likely a caveman dream would consist of a wooly mammoth trying to crush him. The dream would be a way to experiment with new methods of mammoth removal. You could run through so many different options in your dream and find out what works and what doesn't work and then apply it to the real world situation. It is a way to experience a terrifying and dangerous situation without actually putting yourself in danger.

dreams ARE a sort of defence mechanism.. the things that lie buried beneath what you think during the day like to come out at night, frolic about, re-arrange neurons, sing happy songs around happy dendrite bonfires and generally work out problems that you may not have consciously solved during the previous day, week, or ever.
