Yes, Spam, you are correct in that I did spend a bunch of time creating a persona with a great long backstory. I made this 'person' and 'his' life up, entirely. Gonefiguring was an experiment. Was it a waste of time, and shoud I 'get a life' as you say?
I made an alter that was stupid and typical of many new users (see 'his' early posts with all the well-deserved negative reviews). Then I "made" this persona have a horrible personal tragedy (see "I wrecked my bike"). Fuck, I wouldn't wish that on any REAL person - would you? Then I had this persona undergo a fundamental change in personality and progress from severely brain-damaged 'tard to somewhat less brain-damaged 'tard over several months. I had 'him' describe physical and psychological effects that really happen (to some extent) to those in 'his' situation. I described how someone like 'him' would have to adjust as 'his' family also adjusted to the new personality 'he' had. I had 'him' describe how his brain-damaged self would logically vote for Obama (that was really hard - I had to make some stuff up). I showed how 'he' still had I had 'his' 'family' go from concerned about their future when 'he' couldn't work or make money, to secure when the settlement came through. I had 'him' get laid off (as many other Uberers were posting about at the time) and then get a new job that involved capitalizing on the misfortunes of others. Somewhere in there I had 'him' write well enough to win a contest, which is why 'he' is Tardleby the Gruemaster.
The data of the experiment is in the responses to the 'Gonefiguring' posts. It's there for all to see. Here, I'll make it easy to check: http://www.ubersite.com/u/gonefiguring It's very subjective, of course, but the results did surprise me. Perhaps, if you will take the time, they may surprise you too.
'Gonefiguring' was an experiment and that experiment had very interesting results. I found that most people on Uber honestly wish well for those who have diminished capacity that is not of their own devising. I found that most Uberers want to see others succeed. I found that the more that person overcomes the odds, the more that others are supporting them. I found that there is, even in Uber, a core of the positive. Uber, negative and callous and heartless and minus2die-ous as it is, is made of people who (generally) do not revel in the suffering of others. I found that many people will reveal personal details about themselves in conversation if they think that the listener doesn't comprehend the full import of what they're relating. I found that the concept of "the underdog' is alive and well.
Gonefiguring was an experiment. Because of that experiment, I now think Uber is different that it appears. Many of you Uberers participated in the experiment. For that I say "Thanks". I would like you to know that you have surprised me in a positive way. Uber does not portray itself as a kind place, but when pressed it really is.
In summary: Let's put a stop to that pussy-assed "stiff upper lip" bullshit right the fuck now and start making fun of 'tards and mentals and morons and stoops like god wants us to do, whatsay?

Tell you what, everyone: if I offended anyone with this character and what 'he' did, I apologize. The point was not to embarass or make fun of anyone. It was interesting to run the alter and it's interesting to read these reviews. Especially so, since every alter in Uber is coming out of the woodwork to comment. But now the alter has run his course. The responses are polarizing and it's clear there's little new to be learned here. It is, perhaps, time to move on.
Gonefiguring will soon be making one final group of appearances under my guidance and then he will be beyond my control. <Neo> Where he goes from there is up to Uber </Neo>.

I'll give my 2¢ and leave it be.
While it might have been an experiment for you, it wasn't for anyone who "participated." Extracting raw emotion or sympathy from people is far from experimenting; it's a direct ploy to get some type of attention, and whether or not it is reactionary is irrelevant. Had you never been caught you would have had some sort of acceptance from an uber crowd and that is really what you wanted when you started your so called experiment. I tried to reason with myself for having an alter as to why I really wanted it and while it may have been to prove to myself that I can succeed here it is more or less to gain acceptance...unless in the case where I was banned and still wanted to participate.
That said, I think you should just man up and admit it, quit trying to hide behind the social experiment line. I, for one, don't buy it. Philosophers have done this much better and have published data to support their philosophic view. Until you publish a 100 page review of your findings based on uberuser Gonefiguring than I'll continue to believe that you just fucked up and got caught.
I said it earlier, this doesn't really change my opinion of you. I think that you have a fucked up way of showing talent and if you really, truly are into creating something so fictional and believable then you should use that to create a persona for a story, book, or uber series.

Correction, I'm still in college. I started late and am transferring to WSU Vancouver next year, the girlfriend cannot transfer until then, otherwise it would be a bit sooner.

I don't need your +2, Spam, but thanks anyway. I think I have the info I wanted from the vehemence in your responses, and so I'll quit asking why you're so wound up. As far as you're concerned, I believe you're not pissed off for some reason. You're right in one way: I did not plan a three-year experiment, at least not to the last detail. I did plan to have the character post crap for a while, be absent for a while, and then return fundamentally changed. Where it went from there was largely up to Uber. I think it went in interesting ways. If you participated, thanks for playing.

Spam: I still want to know why Gonefiguring being an alter has you so upset. Redirecting the argument to Lungfish and politics is poor tactics as he and I somewhat agree as to what the problem is (though admittedly we don't agree on what to do about it).
Why does Gonefiguring irritate you so? Is the answer embarassing? Are you afraid to answer? If you're right and Gonefiguring was just a stupid alter and not an experiment at all, what harm is there is saying what it is that has your panties in a bunch? And if it is that you now really believe the truth, that it really was an experiment, aren't you just venting your anger about being duped? You're not alone and it's OK. See some of the other responses. Most people, if they care at all, take it quite well. Perhaps you showed some support for the fictional character some time in the past, and now you feel abandoned. Perhaps you felt a connection to Gnefiguring and now it's shattered. Don't be sad.
It's OK. The point was not to make you angry. The point was to learn something from the unmoderated reactions of a group of people who are as random as the internet allows. I answered your question, poorly, on the other post. I half-expect you'll say that if I hate the government, then why would I speak favorably of national health care. Well, you see, that's one of the things I hate. I think it's disgraceful that we, with our super-economy (under normal conditions) can't provide the most basic of needs to our citizens. Sadly, I think it's too late for single-payer, but the Obama plan is starting to make sense to me. It's really about having the government that's more responsive to the needs of its people, instead of existing mainly for the interests of our corporate overlords (which is important too; I'm not naive). Every other industrial country can do it; it works and is the right thing to do; we've failed, but we can do better.
But mainly I hate the government for its imperialistic ways (which is related to our government's relation to corporate interests) over the last 60 years (actually, the last 110 years or so, but it got really bad after WWII). I am ashamed that we killed more than 100,000 people on bad (or contrived) data. Not to mention the troops that we lost...for a lie. Call me a bleeding heart, but I think it's a fucking disgrace and a stain on this country and, sadly, I feat that we are going to pay for it (among a host of other abuses) in a major way some day. I fear for my fucking kid, for chrissake. I hope we can change to fucking government and our status in the world to avert this impending disaster, which I think everybody knows is going to happen. I just hope there's time.
Anyway, yes, I love this country, and because I love it I hope it changes. Melodramatic enough for you.
I hate Christian supremacists, too. They're a big part of the problem and if I come off sometimes as being anti-Republican, it's only because your party has been largely co-opted by these types. I actually consider myself a paleo-Conservative. I actually think Nixon was the best president of my lifetime.

You don't like what you read, Spam, that's fine. You don't have to believe what I say about Gonefiguring. But it's probably worth mentioning that, just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it's not true. I made the guy up and he said what I wanted him to say. Your faith in it is irrelevant.
Near as I can tell (checking a few and becoming bored), you haven't even reviewed any of Gonefiguring's posts. I am at a loss as to why finding out 'he' doesn't really exist is such a problem for you. From my (skrapmetal, that is) perspective, there are only a few Uberers that I can say I believe really exist, and you are not counted among those. As far as I know, you are an alter yourself. Are you an alter? Are you sure about your answer?
I don't need to get a life. I have a life, Spam, and it's what I consider an interesting one. Part of it involves learning as much as I can, all the time.
