I don't know if i'll fulfill the onus set forth by my title or not. I'm typing this straight into this window and really have no idea where I'm going with this.
As for my age, I recently turned 32. 32 is really not THAT old I know but I still remember when I did think it old and sometimes my life circumstances make me feel as though 32 doesn't accurately represent the living i've done.
One thing I find hard to swallow is the fact that my son is 12 and is finishing sixth grade. I'm not old enough to have this pre-teen child really. I mean, obviously I AM but it's just strange to think about it; I remember being twelve, I have friends I've known since BEFORE i was twelve and here's this kid who's already taller than many short adults calling me dad.
I watch this kid taking on the world and think how some thigns are always the same even though the way we play in the world is different. For example, he and his friends are suddenly taking an interest in girls. When I was in sixth grade our extra curicular socialization with girls might involve meeting a group of kids at a movie or basketball game, going to a party or the school dances, and maybe the occasional awkward phone call. My son and his friends though... well, first of all they ALL have cell phones. beyond being able to call thier friends whenever they want wherever they want the greater implication of this is that they are all rapidly learning to text with super speedy ability and so they are constantly talking.
The boys talk to the boys about who likes who and i presume the girls do the same. They taunt each other when a less desireable girl takes an interest and give props when a "catch" shows interest. the boys talk to the girls and vice versa; mostly just small talk or gossip but I've seen texts asking if my boy would hold a hand at a school field trip to the theatre or if he'd kiss this girl or that girl so i know they're bridging the gender gap to meet up and explore this new found territory.
So like i said, I'm only 32. i'm young enough that there's a part of me that thinks "go Boy! Nice work! Pimp Yo Sef!" Unfortunately I'm old enough and now have twelve years invested in this child so the prevailing thoughts are more along the lines of "Oh my fucking god! run away from them! don't let thier jiggly bits and nice smells lure you into thier trap! take your time and be a kid for a little while longer!" Reading Forensics post the other day had me both laughing and cringing.
as for other shit, i feel old when i think about the bills i have, the taxes i have to pay, the prospect of continuing to work in the it industry for years to come, and, well, just the thought of anything in life that does not involve beer and/or fun. I'm really good at beer and fun and would seriously like to pursue it as a career but I haven't yet figured out how to get paid a sustainable wage for fucking off all the time.
I don't think i lived up to the title since I went off on some tangent about my son but I did at least mention some of the other bullshit in life that makes me feel old so fuck it.
I know some of you tire of THIS but fuck you. my most recently completed mosaic; 8 x10... the "colored" glass is actually a pearl colored iridescent glass that shows all kinds of colors as light changes or strikes it differently.

All this old talk has me laughing and cringing as well. I swear I was 21 just yesterday. Really.
Pretty mosaic.
