Her observations and ideas blinded weaker men. Only one fool stared bravely into her being, knowing he'd sooner lose his sight than back down. For this reason, Devin loved Nathan.

Devin's childhood was full of hope and opportunity. Her parents were happily into their 25th year of marriage when she entered high school. She fell in love with arts and literature, forms of expression that were indirect yet still very expressive. She was too much of a coward to vocalize her opinion. Every time she attempted to leave that comfort zone, people brushed her off and looked away, taking for granted the beauty of her honesty. Devin's optimism deterred them from her message, and she would only try so hard before she became discouraged. Devin was fine with helping other people find their true selves, giving them her energy and cheerful smile, but she could never change herself. She realized that on the first day of high school. Devin needed that reminder now, as she waited for Nathan to arrive. She went to her closet and pulled out her diary.

[Monday:

A week from today, I begin high school! I cannot wait, a chance for a new me, I am like super excited, but have to remember to tell dad to take me to the store after work today. I can't wait for the weekend, I want to go now, today. Mondays are my lucky days, after all! I sure hope mom gets off work early today too. She's been working real hard to finish up that 'alternative energy' proposal. It's all she talks about, I just wish someone was helping her, because I believe in her and her ideas. I have faith in my mom, and I know she will be okay...Maybe I will meet a new boy next week. Hopefully he's better than that last 'boyfriend', but that boy was just too immature for me, too sad I guess. Okay I will see you later! XOXO!]

She remembers how excited she was in that moment. However, the rising of the sun is always more satisfying than when it reaches the sky. Devin's clothes did her no good, nor did her new hair color. She was born a perfect blonde girl, with blue eyes that glimmered even in the dark. Devin loved her body and her hair, but felt like doing something new, just once, and changed it to black. When she went to school that day, no one seemed to notice her. She felt like crying, but knew the tears would only cloud her judgment.

The answer finally came to her two years into high school, after she did a report on humanity's behavior. She found a way to sum up her place in the world:

"We all take the sun for granted, never realizing that, one day, the sun will burn out."

That realization would depress most people, and the reality check would be more by guilt than by willingness. Devin never stopped smiling though, even after she realized she would never be fully appreciated. She was just happy to help people and never asked for credit.

One morning as she walked to her English class, the debate team was holding a meeting in the room. She waited outside and paid no attention to what they were saying, until she heard the voice of a young man. It was powerful, and a cold chill crept down her spine upon hearing his words. A sensation came over her body and she almost peaked in the room to catch a glimpse of him, but she was too shy and stunned to move. Finally, when he finished speaking, the team left the room and she buried her face into a book. She rushed inside and decided that she needed to meet this boy, in his natural environment. Devin walked up to her teacher and asked if she could join the team. She wanted to meet this boy she had heard speaking. Devin was intrigued at the thought of meeting someone that was so commanding, he created his own energy.

The teacher was surprised, but welcomed a new addition as long as that person was adding something to the formula. That afternoon, Devin waited for every member to file in, exactly at 4:29 pm, and instantly noticed Nathan. His short, light brown hair was styled messy, but he looked clean cut. Nathan could feel her gaze but kept his dark brown eyes focused on the front of the room, and sat down three seats from Devin. The English teacher had mapped out a simple impromptu debate and asked for a volunteer. Nathan stood up and spoke as if he had prior knowledge of the teacher's randomly selected subject.

Devin studied every word that came from his mouth. Everyone submitted to him, gazing as if they were paying attention but only got lost in his forest of words. Not Devin though, because she knew he was only planting seeds. It would be her that would make them grow. When he was finished, Devin raised her hand in rebuttal, and took everything Nathan had said and made it real. She didn't speak with eloquence, but from the heart. Her voice made Nathan feel warm, and he closed his eyes to soak in everything she was saying. Other people listened, but seemed bothered. Devin finished, and Nathan opened his eyes. A smile crept across his face as his eyes met Devin's, and soon the two became friends, and then much more.

On the debate team, they worked in tandem. They were very similar, but stylistically different. Nathan lived on the edge, and Devin showed Nathan how far he could go. She opened his eyes, and every time he was with her, he felt himself becoming stronger. After graduation, Devin and Nathan spent time together, but not like before. He had no system to work above, and therefore, he stumbled and fell apart. She tried to help him, but could only do so much. Soon, the depression made Nathan dull and dark. Devin's personality made him feel uncomfortable and inadequate. He pushed her away and separated himself from reality. Devin was confused and worried, but didn't push back. She knew he was a better person than this, but if he refused to sow the earth, she refused to waste her time.

After their break up, she had to forget every kiss, and every moment in order to keep her happiness. She hated missing him so much. No one had ever gotten under her skin this way. No person had flown so close to her without falling to the ground. Nathan dared to, and stole her heart in the process. Devin tried to distract herself by getting a job. She worked hard, hoping one day she'd be so focus he'd disappear from her mind forever. The moment never came, but she still trekked through every day. This went on for 3 years and six months.

The first Monday of what would be Devin's first week of being in charge of a team of people, she met her newest team member. He walked in the building and up to the new team leader's desk, with perfectly cut brown hair, aged to perfection. Her back was turned, lighting a candle when she heard a knock on the door. Devin faced Nathan, and smiled. She wanted to cry, but laughed instead and embraced him with a handshake. She kept it professional. She was overwhelmed with happiness as his skin met hers. From that day until her death, Devin woke up every morning with a smile bigger than before, because she no longer had to fight a part of herself. She was complete with him. On Devin's 23rd birthday, Nathan was promoted to lead his own team, and he surprised her by guiding both teams through a planned surprised birthday party. He loved her, and wanted to keep her all to himself, to light up his way and show him how far he could go. She knew this.

That summer Nathan began saving money to go to school, and by the fall he had enough saved to go to a local school of some prestige. Devin had no intention of ever leaving this place, not until Nathan was ready to leave. She would follow him to make sure he didn't get lost in the darkness, and supported every move he made. A new year came, and Devin saw her chance to finally lead and guide Nathan like she had always wanted to guide someone. He had been acting strange at work, not showing the same amount of self satisfaction he once had, and one day in February he didn't show up to work. She could tell he was concerned about something, and she felt it was her place to fix it. Devin swore that she would not let Nathan repeat the mistake he had made once. She didn't care what it took; she was going to lead him, for once. If he allowed her this pleasure, she promised to make him happy for the rest of his life.

So when Nathan asked for guidance, Devin answered his question accordingly.

"You know Nathan, if it was me making a choice like this, I would go with something that I love, and not worry about protecting. What's the point of protecting something if it's not something you really love, or if you love something else more? You won't be happy with yourself, and your life. You'd be sacrificing yourself for nothing, and what's the point in that? It is the self that can never be sacrificed, after all. Seems like a waste of time, and energy. You should smile, and be bright, not constantly tormented and tested."

In late February, on a very chilly night, the two embraced, and their bodies gave warmth to the world. In that moment, nothing else mattered. Nathan had come over at Devin's request. She had planned to surprise him with some good news. However, when he showed up, he looked concerned and angry. She did her best to ease his pain, and in the heat of the night, she felt his anger grow stronger, and she saw him go blind. She was too worried, nervous, and scared now to say anything. So she let him leave, and with one swift blow to the back of her head, she was put out forever.

When Devin regained consciousness, she cried to Nathan, tears pouring down her face. She wasn't smiling anymore, she wasn't afraid to speak her mind anymore; she was ready to tell him everything. In her darkest hour, she was ready. The cloth between her teeth muffled her speech, and the wind picked up her hair and forced her eyes shut as she plummeted into the water. She was fading into a slow death. She tried to get free, but the rope around her wrists was tied so tightly it burned hers. Devin knew that if she could tell Nathan, if he could hear her that he would stop this and save her. In that moment, as water filled her lungs, she understood Nathan's question and concern. She smiled, knowing that he believed he was doing the right thing. That's all that mattered to her. Devin looked at him one last time before she closed her eyes and accepted her fate.

Quietly, she wondered if he'd forget about the sunshine now that it was gone.
