Not feeling triumphant with the small little fish I got on Saturday I set out with Sage yesterday to best my season's catch. Much to my delight I landed not only a bigger fish but my biggest bass to date. Don't get me wrong here. I'm used to PA fishing and more specifically Trout fishing and this is my first year actively seeking out bass and I've only accidentally caught bass before. This whole method of finding the right lure, location, time, wind direction, etc. isn't entirely new but most aspects are.
When trout fishing you only need a handful of tools and a good sense where to throw your lure. Trout fishing is also more common to creeks and streams whereas bass are found more often in lakes, ponds, and wide bodies of water. With bass fishing it's an all together different ball game. You can throw 10 different lures in the same spot and not get a bite, but throw a different color of the same lure as the fourth and all of a sudden you're getting hits all over the place.
Learning the patterns of fish has kept me busy reading. Right now I'm in the middle of the spawn and the fish below I caught on a spawning bed, probably trying to protect her fry. In the next week the bass will move to deeper waters to cool down and hopefully protect the fry from being eaten by the likes of herons, egrets, and other wading birds. Learning new terminology like Carolina rigs, Texas rigs, different types of knots, and everything else associated with bass fishing has been fun.
I'm ready to start landing more like these. I won't post any more pictures of the fish I land....unless of course it trumps the one below. Then I MUST brag :)

That's your best catch of the season? I caught one that big off the dock one evening when I was just testing my line before going out.

Always sad when I have to explain this sort of thing to you.
See, you and Carrot Top are both mediocre douchenozzles. This is beyond refutation. He, however, can live off his mediocre douchenozzery. You require a dayjob. Ginger washout who plays a guitar with cheese > You.
Also, people actually travel cross country to heckle him (there has been one recorded instance of someone traveling from the 17th century to huck a bottle at his head). Most of your "uber fanz" would meh at walking down the block.

Congrats Sico.
If you guys get a chance, you should visit the lake near my hometown, Buggs Island Lake/Kerr Resevoir. (Name changes depending on which side of the VA/NC border you're on.)
It's probably a 1&1/2 hour drive south down I-85, is a huge lake, and would make a good weekend camping trip, especially this time of year. But mainly, it's got lots and lots of really big fish, which is why all the anglers you see on television spend plenty of time and money there.

Believe it or not, no I didn't have time. Where I was fishing in relation to where sage was fishing was 20 yards apart. When I landed the fish I called her and she got 10 feet away before I told her to get her camera and being the fat, disgusting, slob she is it took her 2 more minutes to saunter back with camera in hand and the fish desperately needing water.
Poor, fat, sage.

The problem with that is that neither of us are self proclaimed camera/photography experts, I was releasing the fish and therefor had time parameters to work within, and lastly I don't carry around white cards, gels, lighting stands, and other nerdy shit you do :)
---
You didn't have time to put the fish on the ground and take a picture?
White card is quite good for when you are in a booth getting your passport shots done, just hold it out of shot and it'll make the flash look a lot less harsh.

Don't get me wrong, you can shoot in the sunlight, but if there's that much light, the camera is going to have to underexpose all of the dark stuff, which is a problem for 40% of your fish. And don't get me started on HDR, it all looks gay.

If the fish was the subject, why take all that other stuff? I'd have laid it out on the ground (or on a ground sheet or whatever) knelt and taken a nice closeup shot while trying to not cast it in shadow.

Red...you're right in saying that it was indeed a candid shot...I wouldn't have had him standing directly in the sunlight but he was about to throw the fish back in the water. The other shot he was holding the fish at a strange angle making it look smaller than it was...this was probably a 3-4lb, 16-18" fish (per Sico's guesstimate) and neither picture did it justice.
I'm usually not terrible at photography although I'm DEFINITELY no expert. Thanks for the advice...the IXUS is in my price range and appears to be pretty solidly rated.

tbh Sage, I think your existing camera is perfectly fine for the sort of stuff you do. If you were going to change anything I'd have a bit more of a think about your framing and where your light source(s) are in relation to your subject. I know you're going to say this was just a candid shot, but the light coming from the left bleaches your image somewhat, and leaves most of your subject in the shade.
If I'd been taking that shot I'd have probably had the light behind me, that way the camera has one evenly lit image to capture. Modern cameras are really clever, they do zonal light metering more quickly than any human and rarely get it wrong if you give it reasonable light conditions.
Also, try and avoid the flash unless you have to, or try and bounce the light off a wall - which is tricky with a little compact. You may find that putting a piece of white card beneath the subject's face in dark environments before taking the picture makes the flash a little more even.

Incidentally, Sony make most (if not all) of the CCDs in Nikon cameras. Canon make their own.

point and shoot cameras are all pretty much of a muchness. Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji all do pretty good ones.
Megapixels is a load of crap. All that describes is the density of sensors on the CCD. A much better measure of quality is the size of the CCD itself. Thus a point and shoot camera (such as found in a mobile phone) may say it has 6mp, but will be blown away by a DSLR with a nice big lens so plenty of light falls on the CCD. You will notice more noise on an image taken with a little camera like that, usually graininess in the green channel.
For what it's worth, many of my colleagues use the canon ixus when they need a portable camera and don't want to lug around a big camera.

Yes, I just did a read about the exif data, but that's mainly good for jpeg.
---
Jpeg, tiff and the variety of raw formats are separate from exif data. Exif data records the setup of the camera. Like a signature on a painting.
Jpegs are commonly used for cameras because they compress well, and, although a lossy format, on a one off capture, that's no real hardship. Raw files are, in fact, a form of high quality jpeg, just with a separate luminosity channel, just as found in LAB colour modes.

Wow, that is actually pretty interesting. And he was pretty much dead on balls accurate, too.
I've had that camera since September 2005 but it's still in pretty great condition. I want a new one with more megapixels...I'd LOVE a Nikon (HEARD they're exceptionally good quality) but I'm not sure if they're overrated and I'm not pressed enough on buying a new camera to research them at this point.

Here, remember when you gave me +2's because it wasn't yet trendy to be my troll? http://www.ubersite.com/m/82593#1793509

Wager money and I'll show you. Neither you or Icarus has rated a single piece.

Don't flatter yourself pindick, it's just you post endless tripe.
I bet I've dropped a fair few -2s on your much vaunted alter whose writing is so amazing.
======
And you'd be losing that bet.

+2 for poaching fish from someone's backyard pond.
========
I resent that! It's actually a decent size lake in the middle of an office complex and quite a few people fish there. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=37.669673,-77.570257&spn=0.007898,0.013647&t=h&z=16
Unfortunately I can't go tonight as I heard one of the brakes telling me it was time to be changed.

I happen to love fishing!
being on the water its so amazing..and the suprise of it all.
each bite on your line is like x-mas morning...you just dont know what is down there or how big it is.
it's always different, always peaceful, and always worth it even just being on the water!
I've been fishing since i was old enough to hold a fishing pole and have been taking off my fish and baiting a hook since elementary school.
my step-dad wanted a son clearly...lol , no, but he was Mr. outdoors and dragged me along when my mom was at work during the summer. She was on days and he worked nights.
I caught a giant smallmouth up north years ago and gave it to a friend who owns a taxidermy shop nearby.
He was so happy, he did an excellent job on it and it hangs in his shop as an example of his work.
My boyfriends father actually sent the photos of me bringing it in the boat and stuff to an angler magazine.
Yes, i was in a fishing magazine years ago.
woo.
yup, the fact that i have tits and a vagina amazes me as well!

I remember the days when I had more trolls than just Icarus, Redskies, and Shlongy. What happened to sphagnum, jonnyx, frankthebear, and the rest of the trusty groupies?

I'm rather proud of that.
The thing is, I had an awful premonition that something really shitty was about to hit the front page and voila!

i catch a lot like that. they're fun but the real fun begins when you can hook into the ones that are so fat they're almost malformed... the one time it's okay to deliberately go hoggin.
