Although what follows does not in all likelihood pertain to all rap songs, I cannot think of one rap song that I have heard all the way through that does not meet at least one of these criteria.
-
Many rap songs seem to focus on the subject of rapidly obtaining large quantities of money, often through admittedly illegal means, and displaying one's accumulation of money or symbols of wealth such as expensive cars and/or jewelry for the purpose of instilling envy in one's peers.
Many rap songs include celebrations of violence such as robbery, beatings, and even murder, often in the process of the aforementioned rapid accumulation of wealth.
Moreover, some rap songs go so far as to promote the subjugation and impersonalization of women.
-
Wealth isn't bad on it's own, but what passes for wealth in a rap song is really greed and avarice.
Violence is unfortunately necessary in this world, but it should not be used as the first option in gaining one's ends and never should it be gloriified.
I cannot respect a person who willingly accepts the role of property nor can I respect anyone who wishes that role on another.
Maybe I haven't given rap music a fair shake? I think I have, actually. Rap has nothing for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I once worked at a place where we had music playing all the time. Each person got a chance to play their favorite tunes. When rap was playing, there were problems. Arguments and sexual harassment and profanity took place most often when the staff had rap on the boom box.
No Eric B. & Rakim. No EPMD. No Saul Williams. No Roots.
No care ever.
Nearly all new-age hip-hop/rap is hollow and trite music. Kanye West is the living definition of "pointless."
However, you did mention the Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, RUN DMC, Outkast, Wyclef, Ice Cube and Wu-Tang. Really early LL was also pretty awesome.
There are other means of flouting authority and escaping a middle-class existence. Less obnoxious means. Means that don't involve inflicting her musical tastes on everyone within a half mile radius of her car.
She could become a Second Life slut, for example. She'd likely be one of the few females actually on that site. She could get off on Pokemon, and collect furry porn. Both would involve hiding her 'differences' far, far away from the rest of the community.
If she's so insecure as to insist on airing her differences in public, there's always miming. Or public urination. Or reenacting the Battle of the Nile on random street corners dressed in teddy bear costumes. All much less annoying than rap music.
The studio gangster image evolved because;
1. it appeals to the lowest common denominator. While not all of us can get Grieg or Mozart or '80s pop, all of us can 'get' "BOOM BOOM TSS TSS" and boobies and stupid gold chains.
2. The misplaced sense of culturalism fills void in their identity left by a sense of white guilt instilled by the media and broader educational system that focus more on the horrors of slavery than those who actually put a stop to it. If MTV was pimping Orthodox Jewish gangsters, you'd see sage sporting curly sideburns and wearing a yamakah (sp?).
Also, the survey was fail. Kanye West's best song was "I'm a Gay Fish".
I want to know why rap, particularly gansta rap, appeals to suburban, middle class, white folk (which you are, Sage). Don't tell me it's the beat or anything. You can find that beat in other genres of music.
---------------
lots of middle class white folk get all excited by the anti-authoritarianism, the glamorization of drug dealing, drug usage, and pimping. Sage et al can escape their suburban homes and the other trappings of middle-class domesticity.
For the most part, these rap "songs" glorify the worst aspects of human nature and behavior. I could understand rapping about it to communicate the horror of poverty, violence, racism, and classism, but most rap songs don't do that. Most rap songs glorify it.
with the possible exception of Wu Tang and Busta, and I suppose Dre and snoop (the early years at least) that's a godawful selection of Rap/hip-hop artists.
Where's AesopRock, Cannibal Ox, Blackalicous, Binary Star, Deltron 3030 or Mr Lif?
That's PROPER hip-hop that is, telling stories, none of this: "Me and my niggaz fuck all the bitches while driving nice cars, wearing bling and flashing our green".
I'm fucked off with rappers rapping about how fucking great they are and nothing else, when the fuck did that start happening?
So yeah, if nothing else, check out Aesop Rock's 'Basic Cable' or 'No Regrets' and then tell me how great Akon is with a straight face.
I thought the politically correct term was "white trash", but then I am not "hip" to current terminology.
I yearn for a simpler time when 'ghetto' was associated with 'concentration camp'. MTV has a lot to answer for.
I'm not answering these because I don't know who a lot of the "artists" are.
I remember liking Bone Thugs n Harmony years ago though - some Crossroads song or something...not so much the rap but they harmonize so well.
I tried to rap once. My friend had a birthday party for her son a couple of years ago - he really liked Eminem and I decided that I would try to memorize, and rap, Lose Yourself. It was horrific...I don't know how rappers are able to speak continuously without swallowing and without their mouths filling with saliva. I was drooling everywhere...it was really gross. He became mortified after the first verse (I wore the baggy pants and white tank top and ball cap and everything)...not so much because of the drooling, as I think he'd left the room by the time that started, but because I was trying to do that stupid "cryp-walk" thing...
word.
