Hi.
A few years back, when the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq was really heating up, I was getting serious about two things: going drug free, and getting into the markets with the money I would save from not being a cliched drug abusing poetic jerk stain of a boy.
Instead of reading Ginsberg, I switched to Buffett. From Howl, I turned to the Canadian Securities Course--instead of asking what is the fucking point of anything I started asking--how can I make money off of the people that are asking what the fuck is the point of anything.
Addiction is a funny thing.
At the time, you couldn't really go wrong trading mining and mineral companies on the TSX, it seemed like everything I picked and parked money on was a winner. I was devouring financial textbooks, studying balance sheets and income statements, then taking that fresh info straight to the market--sure, I could recognize a company with good cash flow, but I wasn't really sure of the components, or the mitigating factors, that influence a solid cash mechanism. I was green.
So like everything else in my life, I learned the harder way.
Pacific Safety Products (PSP on the TSX) was a little company based in beautiful BC, they manufactured bullet proof vests, even stab proof vests. They had some success with a Canadian government contract to supply our little but lethal Land Forces, as well as a pilot project with the RCMP. As I mentioned, the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq was heating up and there was much talk of soldiers without body armour going off into the desert to get blown up by IED's.
1 + 1 = 10 thousand.
I thought I was thinking ahead of the crowd--surely, this little company with a stock price of around $1.50 was a giant in the making--all it needed was a little media attention, some investors getting all horney on the stock, a quick signature from the US military and bam! Revenues go from a million to a billion and I retire.
So I park all my winnings into it at $1.68. A month or so earlier it had traded above $3.00. I figured I was doubling up. Buffett says this 'the best indication of future performance is past performance.' I swallowed the kool-aid and asked for another round.
This is before I realized that contracts with the government take time. Lots of time.
Within a month, it was down to $0.68. I wrote a letter to the Investors Relations department, what the fuck is going on? I asked. You're one of the only companies in Canada supplying these products to the military and police, why can't you do more? What the fuck is happening to my money?
1 + 1 = (20 thousand)
Blindly, I double down. There's a slight gain, back to a buck, down to fifty cents, back to a buck, the see-saw action gives me a heart attack. I'm checking and re-checking that stock at least every hour. All day. I even write a letter to Report on Business asking them to do a profile on a solid Canadian company that every investor should own.
No luck.
And here I am today, with a block of shares worth $0.13 each. And that's probably double what the stock is worth. Fucking assholes. No contracts, no billion dollar revenues, no cash flow, no nothing, but the misery of a bad choice that I made twice.
So if anyone out there is interested in learning about the markets, and doing it for free--would you be up for playing a stock trading game? Bet against me, bet with me, whatever...I've checked around online and found a few good ones. Perhaps you assholes already play a trading game and could suggest a good one that we could all play together, like real life friends. I'd even wager that I can out trade you, we could put some real cash up, maybe donate it to the Bank of America for the soon to be established 'swap traders income relief program'.
Don't just sit there asking yourself 'what the fuck is core CPI?'
Get up and go get yourself some answers.
Bye.

Today's strategy:
Playing the News...
Pick 6 of the largest companies by Market Cap in 2 industries.
Use ETF's that cover these 12 companies.
Use DTO and DGP as a hedge in case of big swings that I can't get out of.
Picks:
Homebuilders/Real Estate
XHB ARE PHM DHI KBH SPG
Banks/Financials
KBE VFH BAC WFC BFS JPM
Stuck with my short positions all day, to get through the swings (market high after New Homes report and Durable Goods, and low after Geitner opened his mouth) I was alternating shorts and longs on Gold and Oil.
I've got a really good play for tomorrow. I'm thinking tech should get canned in the nuts.

Just a thought...possibly a stupid one, but it worked once for me in a similar situation.
Buy MORE of PSP at $0.13...It will "dilute" the total cost per share. This way, you don't have to wait 50 years for it to hit the $2 mark. Depending on how much you buy, you could "dilute" it down to a point where all it has to do is make it back to $0.25 or so to break even for you.
I have no knowledge of that particular stock though, so I might be talking out of my ass here.

I fucking came up my own ass with the gaddamned 15 minute delay, I shoulda read about that part.
X, XOM are ones I'm watching too. EIA inventory report tomorrow as well as new home construction report. I put together a killer play, 12 stocks, 2 ETF's, 2 double shorts. I'm betting homebuilders get crumpled tomorrow, and the banks/financials get another round of 'profit raping'.
I've got DGP waiting in the sidelines--just need to do some math on gold prices. And oil, where the fucking fuck is that one going...I can't figure it out.

This morning I was on to DTO. Check it out. It's a double-short, basically the way to play it is this: if you think the price of oil is going up then short DTO, if you think its going down, go long and hard. Easy.
Before bed lastnight I was watching the Nikkei and Hang Seng rally up, I knew the US Treasury was about to throw another trillion or so out the window, I contemplated shorting some of the major home builders, including ARE. Changed my mind first thing this morning.
Bob--nice return today, what did you pick?
Yesterday was an insane day. The shitty thing is that for every day like that, there seems to be a downturn anymore.
It also seems to me that every time that somebody in Washington opens their mouth about the economy/markets/bailouts/banks/AIG/whatever, the market dips. When they're quiet, it seems to grow.
I'll have to check out DTO.
In the real world, I've been riding an OTC stock, symbol DPDW. It is set to grow. It bottomed out last week at $.08, and I jumped on it then. It was up around $0.15 last time I checked. They just acquired some competitors and built a new corporate HQ, so that tells me that they are putting their earnings back into the company.
In game, I'm playing it conservatively to start. Here's my "portfolio", roughly:
A friend of mine, who works on oil pipelines told me to buy Sunoco in the winter and Exxon in the summer because Sunoco pipes mostly heating oil in the NE US, and Exxon supplies the gasoline. Since we're at the end of heating season and at the beginning of summer-drive season, I bought into XOM.
Since the big political buzzwords are "decaying infrastructure" and "shovel ready", I picked up a 1,000 shares of US Steel, symbol X. It looked to be at a low point in price, and construction season is starting with the spring warmup.
I also picked up ARLP in game. They're a coal mining outfit. They looked to be at a low point, and the price was under the lower bollinger band, so I said what the hell and filled out the remainder of my 50k with them. I'm a little leery of this one, and I'll probably unload it.

i know not all americans think like this.
but most (and i've met many) do sound as obnoxious (in a very gay way) and loud as this man and his panelists.
it's just fun to see american public figures confirm the stereotype. i mean, where else can you own twelve cats and act tough and talk shit like Jack does?

I'll post the plays I made after the markets close--I'm not sure if you can see my picks while the game is in process.

It's true that they're not making any more land, but it's also true that
Homilies are not necessarily good investment advice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I bought 40 acres a few months ago for about what 2 acres was going for a year before that."
Yes, and next year it would have cost you more! Land values have multiplied MANY times in the last few years. I am not talking about the $600.00 houses available in the ghetto because of global money meltdown.
You are going to be so glad you have that land. {for many reasons}
I've been out of the market for 17 weeks now. It is, with one exception, the winningest market strategy used by anyone I know, in that I haven't lost very much. The exception is quite an exception, because their strategy puts them in a very very very distant first place. I'd let them trade for me in a heartbeat, but it takes $10M to sit at their table and I ain't got Shlongy money. I got out of the market on the advice of one of the guys that does sit at their table. It's all he'd tell me, and it kept me from losing (then 'til now) about $400KUS. That one bit of advice is worth a steak at Berne's any goddamn day he wants it.
