I found this on the news:

The Top 10 No. 1 Albums of All Time

When the British public was invited to vote for their all-time favorite album that hit No. 1 on the Official U.K. Album Chart, the vote wasn't even close. The overwhelming winner was the Beatles' legendary 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

"It revolutionized music and what we expect from an album," Radio 2's Simon Mayo, told the BBC News. The seminal record was followed by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and U2's "The Joshua Tree," which is the only album produced in the last 20 years that made the top 10.
Some 220,000 votes were cast among the 787 No. 1 albums that range from Frank Sinatra's "Songs for Swingin' Lovers," which was tops on the first-ever Official U.K. Album Chart in 1956, to Christina Aguilera's "Back to Basics," the most recent bestseller.

Top 10 No. 1 albums of all time:
1. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," The Beatles
2. "Thriller," Michael Jackson
3. "The Joshua Tree," U2
4. "Rumors," Fleetwood Mac
5. "Wish You Were Here," Pink Floyd
6. "Revolver," The Beatles
7. "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Simon and Garfunkel
8. "Abbey Road," The Beatles
9. "A Night at The Opera," Queen
10. "The Beatles," The Beatles

Now, being an old geezer, The Beatles have always been my favorite band. However, I disagree with the order of the list. I think"The Beatles (white album) was the best thing they did.

Michael Jackson? He was a great dancer but a mediocre singer.

WTF? Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here?" Dark Side of The Moon was better, IMHO.

What do you think?

needs more pixies, sonic youth, breeders and life without buildings. you am i, bob evans, the drones and sub audible hum. In fact it needs the poster not cutting the cord on music mid-seventies and then taking up the slack with u2. good grief.

I agree, but I didn't make the list, I just posted what the news article said. I am a big Beatles fan and a child of the 60s, and I don't think much of modern music. Heh, my father didn't like most of the music I listened to in the 60s, but he did like Beatle things like Yesterday and Michelle. Some of the stuff I hear on the radio now is OK, but some of it is trash, just like in the 60s.

I fucking hate the beatles (world's first boy band), but +1 for Dark Side of the Moon being better than Wish You Were Here.

I think a more precise way for this kind of survey to be conducted would be to ask the participants to list their top 10 albums of all time, not just one, and find the mode of that top 10 for your results. I'm boring like that.

I don't wholly disagree with that list of albums, though. They're all pretty memorable.

If anything proves that most people don't have taste and that their musical knowledge comes from a very shallow, homogeneous pool, this list does it in spades.

is this based on musical quality or sales?

and if you want to talk about revolutionizing music.....look at the first 6 Black Sabbath releases from 1970 to 1975.....no one was doing what they were doing NO ONE!

Talking about music is like dancing to architecture.

Way too difficult - I hate it when people ask me my favourite Pink Floyd album.

I honestly can't choose - they all have tracks that blow me away - one on Animals.. can't remember the title off my head.. Dark Side.. The Great Gig In The Sky. Wish you were here - title track probably.. Relics - See Emily Play, The Final Cut.. What Have We Done..

Amazing band.

Couldn't choose a best album though.

+2 MUSIC!!

Sorry, I didn't read the part about the albums needing to have hit #1. Most of the greatest albums of all time don't hit number because they aren't popular with the unwashed masses. You imeediately disqualify a lot of top albums.

About the music, however, that list sucks. Granted it's a British list, but you can't just put down a bunch of Beatles albums. Led Zeppelin? The Rolling FUCKING Stones? Exlise on Main Street should be top 5 on any greatest album list.
