"So I guess this is it?" Candice fidgeted as she looked at the man sat across from her, trying to fathom what was going through his head. "I mean... after everything, this is it isn't it?" Her feet were tapping on the ground, each tap signifying a piece of her soul falling into a great quagmire of uncertainty.
Jonathon inhaled deeply. This isn't how he imagined it; this was not the way things were supposed to work out.
-----------------------
Jonathon and Candice stood on the end of a pier looking out on grey seas shrouded in bloated storm clouds threatening to rupture the heavens above them. Candice's violet eyes twinkled as a smile escaped her lips. Jonathon looked on, a grim expression and pensive in his thoughts.
It had taken them years to reach this point and now they were finally there. After many years searching books, journals, newspapers, the internet and library archives they had finally reached the penultimate stage before the final performance.
They would summon a demon, a mythical creature from the sea.
From the sea he will ride
Atop his macabre steed
To spread an evil seed across the land
From which no mortal man can hide.
The Nuckelavee, the Nuckelavee
The Nuckelavee is riding out.
From deep below the swelling sea
Come his horse and he
Berserk and raging
An anger never to be appeased.
Jonathon and Candice summoned the beast, the long feared Nuckelavee. For a century the mythical creature had lain dormant at the bottom of the sea in the midst of a group of islands in a dreamless slumber, no place for it in the modern world. Now it had woken.
"Why this one Jonathon? You've read the stories, the myths..."
"You know why, there was no other like it. We've tried before unsuccessfully. The last accounts of this one are just over one hundred years ago, modern as mythical creatures and demons go. The others were lost in time." Candice glanced at Jonathon. She had heard this a thousand times before; she knew the answer.
"This is actually going to work though. Look at the weather. It was mild only moments ago." The smile had disappeared from Candice, she shook with fear clutching the sleeve of Jonathon's jacket.
Crops and livestock perish
Women live barren and childless
Land blighted, an uncultivated abscess
No fresh water left to nourish.
The Mither o' Sea, the Mither o' Sea
The Mither o' Sea is watching.
Far below in her deep sea dwelling
She will restrain the Nuckelavee
And prevent his mindless killing
For life is lost when the Nuckelavee roams free.
A wall of white sea spray approached from the horizon. At an incomprehensible speed it galloped towards Candice and Jonathon. They held each other's hands not wanting to show the terror lurking in the pit of their stomachs. The sea roared spraying stinging sea salt frozen water into their eyes. They each held a hand up to protect their faces for they could no longer move now to flee.
Suddenly the sea was silent and the air smelled of decaying corpses stagnating in a puddle of rotten fungi and plant life. Candice and Jonathon felt a presence behind them and turned to behold the formidable beast that came from the sea.
A bulbous head on a skinless body
Riddled with veins flowing with black blood
Hairless and its breath reek scented
Sinewy muscles tense, strong and fleshy.
The Nuckelavee, the Nuckelavee
The Nuckelavee is screaming.
The Mither o' Sea has caught him
She's bound him, pulling him down
He cannot move a limb
Beneath her salty, shimmering gown.
Candice screamed. She could sea the blood coursing through the veins like ants galloping through an underground labyrinth. The air smelled rancid and the flesh on the demon's body seemed to be rotting on its limbs although he was strong, malevolent and dangerous.
Birds fell from the sky and dead fish lapped up against the pier where the waves hit. The green fields behind the creature began to go brown and the cows and sheep lay down on the ground panting and desperate for air. The Nuckelavee looked up to the sky and let out a deep chesty rumble from his chest vaguely resembling a laugh. Slowly he approached Candice and Jonathon who were forced to their knees choking for fresh air. The Nuckelavee lifted a gnarly hand pointing a finger at the pair before him. A gargle escaped his lips.
Two leashes of water bound themselves round its wrists, its chest and about the horse's legs. The Nuckelavee was dragged shrieking towards the sea. Jonathon and Candice looked on astounded as the Nuckelavee disappeared over the edge of the pier back to where it came.
A warm breezed enveloped the pair as they watched the newly dead fish jump around the base of the pier full of life and free. The field behind green once more, the animals grazing on the nutrient enriched grass.
"The Mither o' Sea..." Candice whispered under her breath.
-----------------------
Candice and Jonathon waited both apprehensive of what was to come next. They had successfully summoned a demon of the sea. For many years they dedicated their lives to myth and ghost stories believing that one day something would come of it. Now they wouldn't be able to write about how they had come face to face with the demon o' the sea, the mighty Nuckelavee.
The villagers of the island were aware of the Nuckelavee's return from the deep and alighted on the little pier. Jonathon and Candice were now held captive, against their will in the village hall. They'd expected to write articles about their experience, they'd finally expected some of this to become a basis for science and finally not hocus pocus. It seemed as though it wasn't to be as a two men entered the hall.
"We will gie you to the sea, you have woken the Mither and she'll no be happy aboot it." Said the man who entered the hall first.
"Aye, better to be rid o' them noo than tae hiv tae pit up wae a rotten harvest and bad weather and nae fish, no to mention, the Nuckelavee is free. The Mither cannae hold him indefinitely. Better he wis still sleepin'." The other agreed.
"Aye, better the Mither and her pet demon stay put in there murky depths than bither us! Curses tae ye both fir bringin' this curse back to oor doorsteps. We'll hae no peace noo."
With that, Candice and Jonathon were marched from the hall back to the pier where it all began. Their hands and legs were bound with ropes and their pockets filled with stones. The men pushed them onto a small boat with an outboard motor and joined by two of the men from the hall. They said nothing as they took the boat out across the bay.
The engine was switched off and the small boat drifted further out to sea on the tide. Both men took Candice and Jonathon, yanking them up roughly by their ropes.
"Please, no! We meant no harm, please..." Candice weeped but Jonathon remained silent accepting his fate.
"You understand we dinnae want tae do this? We hiv tae. If its no you, it's us."
Candice and Jonathon both looked skyward preying for a last minute miracle but none was to come. The villagers tossed them from the side of the boat, quickly restarted the engine and were away, never looking back. Candice and Jonathon sank to the bottom of the sea struggling against their bonds, water filling their lungs, unable to counteract the weight of the stones in their pockets.
Candice let off one final desperate scream before all went black and both joined Nuckelavee and the Mother o' Sea.
