Insomnia is nothing new to me. Here and there I have spent many a sleepytime bullshiting the night away. Be it a childhood sleepover spent seeing who could stay awake the longest while watching Episodes IV, V, and VI of the greatest saga known to humankind. Or more recently those dreamless nights counting the seconds between the engagements of my living quarter's climate control system because I had finished all my weed earlier that day and had been foolish enough not to secure more. Weed is really the only thing that can assure me a restful night. I'm not using that as "my reason" to smoke that sweet plant. I smoke it for the same reason as everybody else.

I want to get high.

But enough of that nonsense. Lets get down to brass tacks. Lets bring some science into this sumabitchhhh.

We will start with the last time I slept.

Monday.October.20.2008
0430-1100

Those really were the exact times because if you havent slept in while you tend to charish the last time that your saliva had the pleasure of meeting your pillow.

At this point I have been typing on and off for twenty-five minutes. When you lose as little as an hour of your regular sleep time your brain begins to initiate massive shutdowns. I am scared to see how this bit of words that i have strung together will hold up in a fully functioning brain.

It actually seems to be taking my brain longer to process thoughts and to put actions together.

I now have been awake for 40hours.

What the fuck am I doing? Nobody will want to read this bullshit.

When I close my eyes, I can feel them pulsating. It is another facgtor that keeps me awake. That and the great service that Netflix puts out that allows one to watch movies at any moment I choose.

i've read this. honestly i feel better in the morning after a good binge than i do on regular days. i get better sleep even though it's fewer hours. of course it depends on what i drink. i feel worse with wine but liquor and beer tend to make me feel pretty awesome in the morning.

eh, boring.

i haven't slept well since 1994 except for one semester in college and three months in 2003 when i had no job. i'm not even kidding. you'll be fine. crap you got 6 and a half hours of sleep. i'd KILL for that much. especially if i actually slept through all 6+ hours.

unless you go king lear on your sleep time you're really not doing that much damage. and you're not insane, insanity would be more entertaining.

Forensic Girl offers a small piece of science-backed information that you should heed, but let me provide some of my own.

I've been a fan of the greenery for over a decade. While it's true that marijuana interferes with the sleep function of the brain, there are a few things you can do to counter the effect, that don't involve cessation.

Firstly I would suggest taking 3-5 mg of Melatonin about 45 minutes - 1 hour before bed. Even if your pot intake is constant, having enough of this naturally-produced hormone in your system will level out your circadian rhythm, the natural ebb and flow of sleep-related signals that course through your body throughout the entire day, not just at night.

In my experience, offsetting pot with melatonin intake is basically a wash.

Secondly, consider meditation and breathing exercises. It's incredible how quickly you can send yourself to sleep with the right focus on inhaling/exhaling and focused muscle relaxation.

Finally, masturbate more. I know, sounds fucked up, but it works.

Nothing knocks me out like blowing a huge load to some hot lesbian porn.

Even though it's considered un-cool to tell people to stop using drugs, I'm going to. Hey, I spent my entire sophomore year at Uni completely stoned out of my skull.

Anyway, marijuana (THC) messes with your sleep cycle, just like alcohol. It suppresses neural activity in the hippocampus, resulting in problems with attention, memory, and concentration. It decreases SWS (short wave sleep--3rd and 4th stages of sleep) and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, and has sometimes been found to eliminate REM sleep altogether in rats, rabbits, and cats.

Your brain and body need ALL 5 sleep stages to repair and fortify itself (immune system, nervous systems, tissue). Sleep is also crucial to memory, this is especially relevant when it comes to REM sleep and transitioning short term memory to long term memory. This is why smoking pot is a numbskull thing to do when you're trying to learn something.

The effects of smoking pot will linger a while even after you stop smoking.

Using weed or booze to help you sleep is wasteful. If you want to sleep and insist on taking a drug, take a sleeping pill of some sort. Combine that with a nicotine patch and you'll have very vivid, hallucination-like dreams. Trip all night, wake up rested.
