I just got off the phone with an Inspector from the San Francisco Police Department's Special Investigations Unit.
It seems like the post I did last Wednesday entitled Break out the guns (http://www.ubersite.com/m/117258) upset someone to the point that they contacted the SFPD about what I said.
Considering the fact that five minutes of exploring Ubersite will clearly indicate that the site is full of storytellers and bullshitters and complainers and braggarts (I have been all of those and more) and that more than a few of us often go for the gross-out/shock factor in posts, someone obviously didn't get it... or is that really what happened?
The Inspector said the SFPD was not actively looking for this post. Someone emailed the post to the SFPD and said they thought it was a serious threat.
Now, considering my history of anti-San Francisco / anti-California rants and the VERY small number of negative reactions I've gotten from people who actually live in my area, I'd say the odds are good that someone from Uber sent that email, just to jam me up, and that is a low deed, my friend.
To be perfectly honest, I spent a good part of the weekend shitting myself. What if this Inspector actually charges me with a hate crime! Or a threat against the Mayor because San Francisco has already had one mayor assassinated by a psycho! What if they contact my work and I lose my job!
I posted the offensive material last Wednesday. In the post I said 'tomorrow I will [insert description of violent acts here].' On Friday, Inspector _____ tried to reach me. I discovered this later, on the weekend, because I just happened to take Friday off to get work done around the house. See it from the cop's POV. (1) Whackjob issues threat. (2) Whackjob is suddenly incommunicado. I left a few voicemails, but didn't talk to the Inspector until a short time ago.
I mean no disrespect to the authorities who may be reading this post right now, but when I picked up the phone I was expecting some kind of Gestapo/NKVD vibe, since I could potentially be deep in the shit for simply playing with words or making an unfortunately thickly-veiled comment on the media saturation of the issue discussed in the post.
Fortunately for me, I live in a region where the cops are educated and understanding. In other words, they get it.
Inspector _____ was an okay guy. He asked a few very routine questions and since I didn't sound like a lunatic we chatted a bit until my whipped-dog brown-nosing began to annoy him or bore him. And I think he could smell my panic-sweat funk. In closing he suggested I tone it down as far as online 'threats' go, and to be aware that we live in an age in which a small percentage of online threats are unfortunately all too real and that kind of thing can get you in trouble. I agreed that would be the best thing to do.
Now I'm sure a lot of Uber loudmouths will say that if they were in MY shoes at that point they would have told Inspector _____ to go fuck himself because free speech is protected blah blah blah... but we DO live in a time when satire can be misunderstood and that confusion can have serious consequences. If you think I'm overreacting, google Danish + cartoons + muslims + Muhammad.
I have no worries that my post will have consequences. I gave Inspector _____ some personal info and he is free to check up on me. I don't have so much as a parking ticket, so I'm in the clear.
Let this be a warning to my fellow Uberusers, though. Yes, free speech is protected, is sacred in America. Yes, we should be able to say anything we want, especially when writing/speaking satirically and especially if the context of a post is clear when it appears on a site like Uber. That is all true, and I will vigorously defend your right to free speech. Not everyone thinks like us, however, so be careful.
As for me? I've been deballed and I will tone it down. Not because the police are watching me, they have more important things to do, but because some other fuckhead might report me to the police, and thanks to living in a time of psychos the police have an obligation to check out even the most remote threat, just in case. That would be another waste of their man-hours and resources and a pain in my ass.
Toning down the extreme stuff will also cut bart-bart some slack. When things like this happen he hears about it first. He built this nice sandbox and we all have a lot of fun here. Let's not piss in it, okay?
My only remaining question is... I was reported for threatening to shoot gays and an assortment of bystanders, but why didn't any of you shitheads report me to the California Highway Patrol in February of this year when I threatened to start shooting Mexicans, (If I had a gun, I'd start shooting Mexicans http://www.ubersite.com/m/114918), huh? Because you are all a bunch of racist bastards, that's why!
PS - Inspector _____, if you see this, I'm not being a smartass. Honestly. The SFPD are great. Just great. Hey, I could swing by with some donuts later, what do you say? Or pizza? How about pizza?

Please explain to me how the police knew who you were if they were just given a tip about a post on the website under a pen name. I mean if Jack isn't your name then the police couldn't have tracked you down without extensive research. So either this whole scenario is a lie to garner attention, in which case you're like jpig OR you're lying when you say the police just talked to you on the phone for a few minutes and you are being investigated OR this situation is exactly like ghola's but you refuse to admit bubba was at fault.

I must not have been clear enough. I was reffering ot the posts under the non fiction, hence that aside being palced under thoses posts instead of under the fiction. I meant even if what you wrote in the nonfiction section was fiction the view points are your actual view points.

Well Jack, it actually never occured to me to use the labels for all of my OWN work, I just naturally assumed that it was to tag work from other people that I enjoyed. Just goes to show you how different minds work!

Actually, Ubersite is one hell of a great repository for short stories, a form I had not tried much at all before coming here. Many of the labels I put on things are for my own use as much as the use of others. I use them as an index to my work. My labels, my choice. I guess I should have consulted Method for the proper way of doing things.
