A Dutchman has just led Russia to victory over his home country, Holland, in the third most popular international sporting event in the world. Russia will now face either Spain or Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2008; a scintillating footballing prospect that I'm eagerly anticipating.
The football this evening, however, was far from inspiring and I found myself mostly pondering something that must be at the forefront of Guus Hiddink's mind; could I lead a foreign nation to victory over my own alma mater, Scotland? My initial response is 'Fuck aff, ye daft radge!'
Having said that, there's more than what is essentially petty nationalism to consider. Hiddink is likely to receive a healthy bonus for his contribution to the Russian cause; Russia have played some great football, especially against Sweden, and fully deserve their semi final place; Holland played poorly and it would have been outrageous were they to win following a penalty shoot out.
So I've seen justice done this evening, but I've also seen a man 'betray' his country. Has he actually betrayed the Dutch though? Will the headlines tomorrow call him a traitor? It would be unfair, I feel, as if the Dutch wanted him to manage them, they surely would have hired him a long time ago. It's odd, in fact, that the services of Hiddink have not been secured by Holland as he's one of the best managers around, better, certainly, than some of the appointments that England and Scotland have made when it comes to managers in recent years: the name Bertie Vogts still strikes fear into my own heart, for example, and I doubt that England fans will care to be reminded of Steve McClaren.
Hiddink then, has done his job; he's been man enough to stand up and do what he's paid to do. The potential was definitely there for patriotism to cloud his decisions, I know I would have had a hard time setting up an English side against Scotland. How will Fabio Capello feel when England face Italy for the first time? How would the assistant coach of the United States, a Pole, feel were the States ever to pay attention to the beautiful game and put out a side capable of beating European minnows Poland?
The question of your country of origin is an interesting one, particularly when it comes to sport: you're either a hero or a villain, there is rarely any middle ground. David Beckham has been both, so has Diego Maradonna, buck toothed fattie Ronaldo is also up there in terms of polarising supporter opinion and on a personal note, Alex McCleish has gone from national hero in Scotland, to manager of a second rate Championship side; a fall from grace indeed.
So, Uber, could you do your best to beat your own country? If you could, how would you feel afterwards? Personally, I'd feel a cunt and wouldn't betray my heritage for anything.

We just got a Kiwi coach to coach the Wallabies (our Rubgy Union side) for the first time ever. He's pretty good, and no-one seems to care that he's a New Zealander.

You're right, the Dutch played horribly--certainly didn't deserve a win. I don't think it matters that Guus coaches Russia. He's done a good job wherever he's been--both in South Korea and Australia.
Now that the Dutch are out, I'm betting that Germany or Spain will take it, though I do admire the Turks. They've had a fantastic run.

To answer your question above, although football is patriotism for the supporters for the managers, coaches, players, directors etc. involved, it is a career, a living and a love. For the love of the sport then the love of the country. Country is a major factor as most sports people will say there is no bigger honour than to play for their country.
On the subject of football managers opposed to players, I think most football managers if presented with a challenging position would take it, patriotism aside. He is no traitor to his country but I don't think its a question of being man enough, its a question of him doing a good job and being professional enough to set allegiances to the side and get on with it. On the toss, a frying by a few newspapers is probably more appealing than the ridicule of his peers should he have lost. In any case, papers are silenced eventually and probably, in the future, he will return to his country a national hero for his successes.

He has been coaching the dutch too and then South Korea, Australia and now Russia.
It's a job like any other to him and he's pretty damm good at it too.
All the national teams he coached have peaked under his 'regime'
He had his extremely young Russian team prepared very well against us and we played really poor in comparison to the first 3 matches.
I think his team can go all the way as they're extremely fit as they are at the start of their season and absolutely free of respect for 'big' names.
Guus isn't called or considered a traitor in the Netherlands at all.
BTW did you know we provide the highest number of national coaches in Europe and world wide?
I guess we coach better than we play.

If one of them were to give less than the full effort toward winning I'd suspect they'd let feelings get in the way of the job and take them off the field for the good of the team. Everyone else on their team wants to win, the team management wants to win, it's the job of everyone on the team to win, so if one player is inntheway of that, that player gets sidelined and reprimanded.
