Every day I cook rice in a rice cooker I specifically bought for the purpose. When the rice is done I pour in about a cup of milk and a can of tuna. Depending on what we had for dinner and/or whatever might be sitting in the fridge I may add a few other things like chicken soup, bread, cheese, pretty much anything but vegetables. Then I take this delicious concoction and feed it to the dogs.

Actually I don't put an entire can of tuna in the rice. I have to give the cats a bit of it or they will walk around yelling half the night.

I started doing this about a year ago when I got concerned that Alex was losing weight and not eating his dog food. There is a medical reason for this, he's 12 years old. Actually all of my animals are getting old. I'm not happy about it, but what do you do time marches relentlessly onward. The dog slop is working too. He's bulked back up and looks more like his old self. The days of going on long runs or backpacking trips are over, but such is life.

Anybody watching the news these days? At the same time that I am dumping rice and tuna in the dogs' dishes there are people in 3rd world countries rioting over a debilitating increase in the price of food staples like rice. My dogs probably eat more in a day than an entire family in Haiti.

I'm not really going anywhere with this. I certainly am not going to stop feeding rice to my dogs. I just think its a rather sad state of things that my dogs live better than a lot of people out there in the big green and blue world.

Capitalism will never allow the eradication of starvation. In some respects, I agree with that. Eating well SHOULD be a privilege. We should create an organic pablum type slop that contains all of the nutrients, fiber, and energy a human being could possibly need and ensure that every individual on the planet has access to that paste.

------------------------

This is only good if they put sdomething in the food to steralize people.

If you go about feeding every person on the planet who has no job, education or purpose in life their purpose will become pooping out babies. it would lead to a huge population explosion to the point where we will not have enough gruel.

---

You always look on the bright side don't you Mister Practical?

I do like where your head is at, though. See I think you should be able to afford the kids you have to be of any real benefit to society.

So - fine - if there was a completely harmless reproduction inhibitor infused into the mush that would be best.

If you can afford actual food - your procreation is uninhibited, however. Fair enough?

Oh, and I am sure if we really put our heads together we could put everyone on the planet to work... with all of the massive recycling initiatives that can be applied to the various landfills and new, greener solutions applied to existing industrial output, and universal healthcare available and applied for everyone would keep us all pretty busy.

That should be the goal for 2020.

Yes. There is a strong correlation between low SES groups and obesity. I even worked on a study in which we looked at not only food choices, availability, etc. but also the physical environment, i.e. do the people have to drive everywhere, can they walk, if so, are the sidewalks safe, are there safe neighborhood parks for the kids, etc. and correlated it overall with obesity, type II diabetes, etc. It was a huge fucking study.

I was just stating my gut feeling that, overall, the imbalance between countries with food in abundance compared to countries where food is scarce, is skewed and probably because of corrupt agencies.

I don't have the energy to go into healthy foods vs. processed foods, America, obesity, starvation, etc.

Blaaah

What bothers me is when I see how fat America is (Britian too) and compare it to countries where starvation is a problem. How did this happen? Is it because Americans are gobbling up food just so they can watch people die for their enjoyment? Or is it because some entities that are in power care more about the bottom line than people?
============================================

Do a plot diagram of obesity population percentages versus technological advantages on a timeline from the early 1900's - present. Not too hard to see that with the advent of motors, electronic devices, and especially computers, we are continually decreasing the amount of physical labor required to achieve/produce the necessities of our world. Less physical labor --> less energy exerted to burn caloric intake --> change in metabolism --> physical urges/pangs of hunger and "never feeling full", because bodies don't process fuel the same way as in the past --> eating more to feel satisfied --> weight gain because caloric input exceeds caloric output.

Loki - good on ya for feeding your dogs a varied diet; keeps their bowels regular and helps them feel full and not thirsty as most dogs do that only get dry food.

My Pinko friend has been staying at my place for the last month, recovering from surgery. Just yesterday as I was fussing over, pampering, and spoiling my cat just like the old crazy cat woman I am, she was telling me about how animals are going to be euthanised and abadoned because the recession will eventually prevent people from feeding their animals and stuff.

She's always the 'worst case scenario' type.

I just shrugged and said if it got to that point, I'd probably start stealing her food or go a little hungry and feed her part of my food.

But yes, the whole concept of an animal getting to eat better than a person is a little fucked up but who is at fault? Your average person is probably more than willing to spend a few bucks and help poverty stricken people on the other side of the world but the entities of 'government' and 'corporations' aren't human.

My guess is the latter.

______________________

Funny enough, the obesity problem in America is one-part affluence and and one-part poverty.

The nice thing about living in a world without food shortages, with a high (comparatively) standard of life, is that you'll likely not starve. BUT, the food that is affordable to the impoverished in the US is utter shit. Making a meal with lean meat and fresh vegetables is much more expensive than buying Ramen in bulk, or $1 cheeseburgers laden with fats and preservatives...

Unless you live in Kansas, apparently you can rent a house for $400 a month or some craziness, and buy out the market with your minimum wage paycheck.

Still, obesity on the bottom rung of capitalism smells a lot nicer than distended bowls in Haiti.

just saying.

The veteranarian's office where I buy food for the two cats we have has several jars for charity donations. Mostly animal shelters and the like, but there's one that is for feeding Starvin' Marvins in far-off lands. The sign on the jar has the usual fly-eye Marvin and the printed name of the charity, and someone has handwritten "How much did you just spend on pet food and health care?" It works on a lot of people.

Of course we have different definitions of "eating well" you smug faux Scottish fuck.

Each of our personal experience on this planet establishes what that is. Unique to the person. different cultures, beliefs, availability, opportunity...

What I suggest transcends all of that. Pay attention.

WONDERFUL GRUEL - like the shit they ate in the Matrix. Mass produce it and distribute it around the world. While we are at it, educate, and cure all them underprivileged little fuckers as well.

WHAT?

No money in that either?

See? Capitalism blows.

I'm not talking about treats and I didn't think you were either. Clearly we have different definitions of what 'eating well' means. I'd take it to mean a healthy and balanced diet. Apparently you want steak. Fair enough.

Seriously, though - treats should be earned. You want a New York steak, you gotta work you ass off or contribute to society in some quantifiable way. The more you contribute, the more perks you receive.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't eradicate world hunger. We could, if we wanted.

We just don't want to - there is no money in it.

As I said, capitalism will never allow for it... and people don't want to talk about it.

But, as there is fuck all we can do about it we will inevitably continue to ignore it.

Unless we decide to talk about it.

But we won't. Our brains shut off - in fact it pisses people off to even THINK about it.

People starving?

FUCK THAT. I don't want to think about how that much feel - Christ, I miss lunch and I'm dyin'.

Capitalism will never allow the eradication of starvation. In some respects, I agree with that. Eating well SHOULD be a privilege. Continue to leverage the free market as society does now - reward innovation, quality and excellence with cash - but just up the bottom line. If people were only starving because they didn't want to eat the gruel? - Well tough shit - those people should starve to death, we don't need them around.
