I don't get it.
The university I so proudly attend makes the claim that the individuals who come here are in some way shape or form intelligent people. Of course, I find myself completely awestruck at some of the stupid things these "intelligent" people do. An example? I thought you'd never ask.
Well sir, can I interest you in helping the needy?
Yes? Well, can I interest you in going to a tropical climate?
Well, not a vacation, but you do get to sleep in a shack.
To do what? Well sir, it's to build houses for the homeless in the Dominican Republic.
And it's only 1500!
I have a few problems with this pitch. Well morons, I may still be hungover from my own Dominican Vacation, but $1500 sounds like a lot of money for a trip which is missing some bare essentials. i.e.
- Free Beer
Of course, there is also the fact that I paid $500 less to sleep in a king sized bed with drunk Canadian girls. Cindy, if you're reading this, I miss you.
Call me an asshole for not wanting to pay $500 more than my resort getaway to do manual labor. I dare you.
Even IF money isn't an issue, I still can't wrap my head around why anyone would think they can offer anything to this country by going over. How much work can a group of stupid, preppy, nerdy, out of shape University students get done in the scorching heat of the Dominican Republic? You know who might be more apt to do this work? Maybe, the acclimatized, already unemployed citizens of the Dominican Republic!
Is labor really in short supply?
I'm just happy I made a difference. That's right, I can sleep soundly at night because I provided something for the good people of that country. By getting drunk for a week, I provided jobs for every single one of those little Dominicanese people who work at my resort. You want to save the world? Go get drunk. As for building homes in the Dominican, I wouldn't cry if you caught Malaria doing so.

You do realise though that the point of this isnt really to help the people, it is actually to give stupid rich people with nothing better to do, and who have never had to struggle, a chance to come home with an immense sense of self worth.
Also something for them to brag about at dinner parties, before going into lurid detail about how 'Awful' it was to live like a homeless person. 'I just dont know how they cope without a personal valet to help them in the mornings'
This has very little to do with the actual people.
