MOSCOW (Reuters) - Six people have been killed in three days by icicles falling from buildings in a central Russian region, ITAR-TASS news agency reported Tuesday.
Plummeting chunks of ice is an annual hazard for pedestrians in Russia during the spring when the sun finally melts thick layers of ice and snow which build up on roofs over months of freezing temperatures and darkness.
Medical authorities in the region of Samara told ITAR-TASS that five people died in the city of Samara and another person died in the nearby town of Otradny between February 23 and February 25.

Man, what a fucked up way to go. Sure at first glance you might think it's all like Final Destination and shit; a huge icicle of death falls 50 stories and impales you from the top of your dome to your taint, nailing you to the ground as you make some joke about vanilla ice.
The reality is that it's a sucky way to bite it, cause you know that a giant icicle falling and impaling you doesn't kill you. No it just fucks you up, and if that weren't bad enough, you're in Russia. You're in a land that encourages heavy drinking and pet dancing bear ownership. You're stumbling around in 12 feet of snow bleeding profusely and asking for help in a nation that believes "winning" is losing 9 million men while killing around 2 in a war, who thinks total economic collapse from unsustainable military buildup and the succession of large swaths of territory was just a growing pain.
Enough gibberish....

I saw this happen in Boston once on the corner of Newbury Street and Mass. Ave. The Virgin Records store (now a BestLie) has these angled slates jetting out from the side of the building about 30 feet up. A guy was standing underneath it, waiting for a bus. All of a sudden, a giant chunk of ice breaks and slides off the side of the building and fell near the guy. It hit his shoulder and knocked him to the ground. If he had been standing like, a foot to the right it would have hit him right on top of his head and probably broken his neck.
Falling Ice. Shit sucks.

the buildings in my neighborhood (http://www.cmaq.net/files/20747.jpg) are all three stories old houses close to one another with pretty unsafe roofs.
i wanted to take pictures of the large chunks of ice bulging from the roof and the 5 feet long icicles but the city cleaned them up last night because of the hazard.
it's snowing again today...4 meters and counting this year! :°(

One year my dad gave me a nice air-powered pellet rifle for Christmas. Shortly after that, my mom noticed huge icicles hanging off the gutters at the back of the house, two stories up. She said I could shoot them down with my new pellet gun. I spent hours blasting away and got almost all the weight of the icicles off of the gutters. In the spring my mom and I got climb up on the roof and hang off ladders to help my dad install new gutters on the back of the house because I had thoroughly swiss-cheesed the old ones at her behest.
