By virtue of the fact you care what 'they' think (you wouldn't have posted otherwise), you care what 'I' think.

I think you suck.

Fucking kill me if I signed on to read/look at/not give a fuck (all at the same time) what anyone had to say about a television show.

Thanks for coming, let me know how that works out for ya'

I've typed in the past on how television and movies differ from paintings or music or books as entertainment. Books and paintings and music leave some aspect of their message to the audience. They ask you to think in order to fully appreciate. Television and movies strive to offer you every espect of mental occupation with their medium. They ask you to not think but just sit there and take it in.

-------------------------------------

Another way they differ is that their purpose is to sell products. (The amount of product placement in current movies puts them in the same league as TV shows.) Not coincidentally, most TV shows and movies also sell many "ideas" to the viewer on how to behave with the opposite sex, what to wear, how to be popular, etc. (Hence, why you need to buy the products/gym memberships/plastic surgeries.) The mental "shut-off" thing some of you mentioned is necessary to allow these messages to penetrate your subconscious.

Lost shit the bed. They designed it for two seasons, got great reviews and f'ed up the story to stretch it until reviews inevitably go tits up.

it will get worse and worse and never answer all the questions.

but I will still probably watch it.

--

Wrong.

The show has a definitive end coming very soon. There are 48 episodes left to write, shoot or air. Two 24 ep regular seasons or 3 shortened seasons of 16, depending on how long the writers hold out.
--------------------

It had a definitive ending slated for the end of season two. It got good ratings so they stretched it out. If it continues to get good ratings it will keep going on.

Rome and the wire are the only two US TV shows that had planned out (and in the wire they still added seasons). The rest were dragging along as long as they got viewers (soprano's was started open ended).

That what seperates TV in the UK.

Skrap- you know we're talking about Lost and not Survivor, right? Lost isn't reality TV. It's a scripted TV drama.

Ah. Apparently you do care what I think, at least a little.

Although I think very little of television in general, my comment was not meant to disparage television as a form of entertainment. It's fine for those who like it. My lovely wife, who is also an Engineer and actually rather intelligent, is one to watch TV. I like her just fine and think no less of her for her habit of turning her brain off and having her every thought beamed at her by a corporate sponsor for an hour or two an evening. My comment was more directed toward the audience of 'reality television' in which you proudly include yourself.

The premise of 'reality' television is that audience interest is increased by the existence of unknowns in the plot. What will this character do? Who will be voted off the island? But the fact is that all these questions have been answered months in advance and the details are unknown only to the flock in front of the tube. The shows are as scripted as any trite sitcom.

Where 'reality' television fails even moreso than does regular television is in that, once the possibility of the unexpected happening is removed, the show becomes just a poorly written soap opera with occasional scenery. Now, if you happen to like poorly written soap operas with occasional scenery, they by all means watch. But to think that what you're watching is in any way random or unknown is to be deluding yourself.

What did Dune's Sandworm look like to you before the movies and TV shows? Can you remember? What about Middle Earth? What do you imagine when you listen to Bach? What do you hear when you look at a seascape painting?

Television is fine for those who like it, and again, I'm not saying you're lesser for watching it. But since television and especially 'reality' television discourages rather than encourages working one's brain it should never be taken seriously. There is nothing on television, and there's a lot of it.

Right, I know the strike is on and they claim only half the season is written, but I didn't really get skrap's point about how its being 'predetermined' is relevant to enjoyment of the series, aside from the obvious 'we might only get half a season and be pissed about it.'

sico- I mean the online fansites and such, where they discover every nuance and report on it. It's nice that they're around, because it's impossible to pick up on it all but those nuances do add to the entertainment value of the show.

We know it was a flash forward, but I guess in my mind I was thinking it was relatively soon in the future..but I don't know that we actually have an accurate indication of how much time has passed. Instead, it could be that it's that something that we haven't seen yet leads to hatred or indifference to whoever is in the coffin- Walt or not. I'd heard about the size of the coffin too, but even watching again last night I don't know that it struck me as particularly small, I might have just not noticed.

hahha...not that i care

also, if by your logic I shouldn't enjoy something scripted (and believe me that I understand it is all scripted) then why on earth would I sit down to enjoy a good book, a good song or even enjoy a centuries old piece of art for that matter?

Actually I assumed it was the black character based on the size of the coffin. What Lost nerds are you referring to and didn't we already know it was a flash forward by the end of the episode?

skrap - i'll ask you why my chosen form of entertainment through art would be any sadder than any form that you would choose. can we agree that art is in the eye of the appreciator and thus we don't have to argue as to whether this is art or not? What would be the difference between Lost or a good enjoying a good Dead song other than your personal preference?

How one enjoys themselves shouldn't be sad...it may not be the way that you do but that doesn't make it any less valid as a form of entertainment. Haven't you been to Disney...isn't that whole place predicated on fictitious characters that people have watched grow over the years?

I understand that you don't care, but I do think it's a bit sad that you either believe that there's some non-scripted or non-predetermined aspect to this show and it's ilk or you understand that it's all done months in advance and yet you derive some entertainment from it anyway. Again, you don't care, I know.

Right but then unless it's way in the future (the lost nerds mention the name of the funeral home was an anagram for 'flash forward') then why whould Jack say he was neither friend nor family and Kate didn't care at all? I know Walt was with The Others, but if he left the islnad at the same time as the crash survivors, how can he have betrayed them? Do we know they were from NYC? JUST BECAUSE IT WAS A BAD NEIGHBORHOOD YOU ASSUME IT WAS THE BLACK CHARACTER.

There's a few things about 'Lost' that really piss me off. Mostly just that it's a load of meandering shit that doesn't actually go anywhere, however, I did stop watching after the episode in the first series with the polar bear running about arguing that nothing could beat that; perhaps I am mistaken, but I doubt it.

The other thing is that in the UK it's exclusively on Sky, and even if I did want to watch it, I'd be loathe to give Rupert Murdoch any more money than I already unwittingly am.

There's something I really don't understand, or indeed like, about the way Americans seem to do entertainment programmes. Start of with a thrilling opening and a couple great episodes at the beginning, make about 20 unnecessary 'middle' episodes and then have a brilliant climax that even the most retarded viewer can understand without having watched the 'middle' episodes. This is certainly true of Heroes (which I loved when it first came out, but quickly tired of), Prison Break (which I watched 10 episodes of and then just watched the last one as it got fucking boring) and 24 (the most hyped and curiously shit programme ever).

The best shows on earth have been short running and ended on a high without alienating their audience, the best examples of this being 'The Office' (UK, not, I stress, US version) and 'Fawlty Towers'. Honourable mention also goes to 'Dad's Army' for being the best sitcom ever.

Earlier in the year I attributed it to simply the great start they had but then they had that 6 game slide and bounced back...this team has mettle.

I'm not thinking cup this year but it's damn fun to watch, especially with last year as a comparison.

Well, KK, that's the beauty of MMA is that while there may be a favorite each fighter has a unique skill set. Also, the judging is done by people that are watching it first hand. There will always be a degree of uncertainty. I love fights where the underdog wins, or a haymaker from out of no where wins.

Mir isn't meant to fight at that high of a weight. He's more of technical and quick fighter.

Actually, I think Deadwood got great ratings (I think)..it didn't end due to ratings, but I believe due to cost. Maintaining the set was one of the the most expensive TV sets there have been if I heard correctly, and the cast was so large, etc.
