I've believed for a long time that 'happy pills' do not fix anything for anyone. That if you really took the time and got down to what is really bothering you that you have the ability to fix anything that might be psychologically wrong with you. I've known many people that lived under the impression that taking pills will make them feel better only to find themselves unable to cope with life without the assistance of these pills; sometimes even with the assistance of them.
I think it's sad that we cannot operate without having misinformation shovel fed to us by the media, the pharmaceutical companies, the doctors that reside in their pockets and the mental health care professionals that are so overloaded that they don't have a choice other than to prescribe these pills just to mellow people out while they try to handle their own case load.
The world has, for a long time, become this living breathing herd of sheep following a shepherd that just leads them in circles until they get crazy enough to spin out of the vortex, uncontrolled and beyond help. People will say 'well I have this problem so I take this pill'...well I mean is it physical problem or a mental one? And if it's mental are you doing anything to correct it or is your intention to stay on that pill for the rest of your life or until the next happy little pill comes along?
A year ago I had a pretty decent wakeup call that told me I had better get my shit together and start taking care of myself or this trip could be a lot shorter than I'd like to be. Frankly I'm fucking glad it happened because I've felt better in the last 6 months than I can possible remember. And now I'm off meds completely and I yes there are a few people that helped but when it came down to it I had to look at myself and hold myself accountable and make some fucking changes.
You don't like how something is going in your life...fucking change it bro...I'll fucking support you.
Peace Bitches.

It's ok, but it's a little TOO pale for my taste, plus you're mostly paying for their effective advertising with their "Don't float the mainstream" catch phrase and whatnot.
I still buy it sometimes though.

I know, but blanket statements about misery during the time of a kids birth generally aren't recieved well.
We all know they are pure bundles of joy, and postpartum depression is a plot by the liberal media to get white christian people to have more abortions.

While I agree with the sentiment of the post, I suppose it bears repeating that some people really do have a poor balance of chemicals in their bodies that make them behave in unacceptable ways. If the created that imbalance themselves through some means (alcoholic dementia, too much LSD, whatever), then I waste no sympathy on them. If not, then I hope they get better with the treatment they get or should get. Unfortunately, Man is not as good at biochemistry as is Nature, so any 'happy pill' one is prescribed will come with a lot of unhappy side effect baggage. But we do what we can.

Granted, some illnesses like Schizophrenia require constant medication therapy. In my opinion, Schizophrenia shouldn't even be considered a psychological disorder anymore. It's a medical condition.
-------------------
Or spiritual, if you believe in demonic possession, from the flip side of the coin.
Either way, from my studies/experience, I agree that schizophrenia is not a purely psychological disorder - too much evidence and findings relating to the effects on/of the CNS to perpetuate that standpoint.
-------------------------------
Anyway, as a culture, we seem to be unwilling to work on the mind. We'd rather pop a pill and be done with it.
Psychiatrist = MD. Approaches mental issues from a medical model. Writes scripts for pills. Doesn't do much interpersonal therapies (if at all).
Psychologist = Ph.D. Approaches mental issues from a psychological model. No pills. Only does interpersonal therapies.
HMO's = one of this country's huge fucking problems.
-----------------------
You forgot R.Ph. = does the bidding of the MDs, Ph.D.'s, and HMO's (but not neccesarily in that order).

and it's true, i'd rather walk around with a natural beauty (like the woman singing in the video i posted for instance) than a someone looking like a real doll.
my gf tends to look plastic when we go out and it can be embarassing since it can make me look superficial and shallow. then i realize i'm the one who told her how to dress and fix her hair so it's ok. :-Þ

Psychotropics have their place but they aren't the answer.
I hate that pharmaceutical companies are allowed to use Zoloft commercials on prime time television. It misleading to the public.
I tell people to think of psychotropics like Tylenol or antihistimines. They are useful for easing SYMPTOMS, but they don't heal the CAUSE and you can't stay on them forever.
Ideally they should be used in conjunction with some kind of interpersonal therapy that addresses the individual's psychological issues. Then, with an agreement between the patient and the shrink, the individual should be weaned off of the medication (under a physican's care of course).
Granted, some illnesses like Schizophrenia require constant medication therapy. In my opinion, Schizophrenia shouldn't even be considered a psychological disorder anymore. It's a medical condition.

Is the thing that happened a year ago when your wife found your ubersite account? In all honesty I hate taking a simple analgesic such as Advil or Tylenol if I can help it. I dated a Prozac chick when I was younger, about 6 years ago, and had a hard time figuring out why she needed it. The dependency alone freaked me out so I did the only think I knew--pulled out. I guess congratulations are in order for breaking the cycle, you fucking rebel.

They told my mom the same thing after her mental breakdown. She doesn't need them anymore. It took her about 5 years to get off her "happy pills" but she did it successfully, it takes a lot out of you to get better mentally. She still has some issues like any other person but she doesn't need the pills anymore. Doctors don't know everything and can be wrong, they are human.

I think all shrinks push pills, in my experience.

People will always take the easier option if one is provided.
The biggest roadblocks to self-actualization are effort and motivation.

My shrink tells me it's a "forever" thing, because of my chemicals in my brain being all wacky.
That alone is depressing.

Most pills are ment to help for only a short time, just to help get over the hump until you can start to really help yourself. That takes a few years for some, or a few months for others. It's not ment for the rest of your life unless you have an issue that needs you to be heavily medicated.

Good point, caul. I actually do miss NOT being medicated. I used to get into these hypomanic fegues where I had a ton of energy and a plethora of excitement... but I don't get that now, and it makes me sad.
The biggest thing that's helping me RIGHT NOW is that my life is changing, boyfriend is gone, etc... The circumstances of my life for the past two years have been horrible, and I just needed to get out of that to really help myself.

Just because I take pills doesn't mean that I can't recognize an old argument when I see one.
===
if one day the doctorz and the scientists tell you all the pills you take are no good, what you gonna do?
***
probably be greatful. I hate the idea that I'm on them, but whenever I try to stop I get all depressed and nuts.

corn - it's not that I'm here to present and argument that is original but to present the article where essentially the drug companies are admitting to that old unoriginal argument.

I agree, to a point. Some people (10%+/- of those who pop pills) are beyond help, and need pills to zonk them so they aren't a danger.
