Globalization is great.
Fantastic even.
It allows those of us lucky enough to be born into the developed world to have access to 32 flavors of every conceivable product you could ever need (and quite a few you don't) from every corner of the globe, for a relative steal.
So I wasn't surprised to hear that globalization is also keeping all those sweet sweet mind altering substances nice and affordable.
Which makes perfect sense, even though I haven't thought about it before now. Back in high school a quarter of weed was $25, and if I still smoked dirt weed it would be the same price. Unfortunately someone in college turned me on to the good shit and I've been paying several times more ever since.
Still, throughout the years as inflation has made the quarter phone call and 50 cent coke go the way of Natalie Holloway and those other missing white womenz, I've never had my hookup tell me that I was going to have to pay a bit more because the federal reserve decided that poor housing starts indicate that rates might increase a tenth of a point.
When I read this, I understood why.

Abstract:
Retail prices of major drugs like cocaine and heroin have declined dramatically during the last two decades. This price decline has tended to offset the effects of drug policies aimed at reducing drug use in major industrial countries. The main finding of this paper is that the decline in the retail prices of drugs is related to the strong decline in the intermediation margin (the difference between the retail and producer prices) in the drug business. We develop the hypothesis, and give some evidence, that globalization has been an important factor behind the decline of the intermediation margin. We conclude with some thoughts about the effects of globalization on the effectiveness of drug policies and argue that globalization may have increased the relative effectiveness of policies aiming at reducing the demand of drugs.

While many of you can't access the article without paying I'll break it down with some of their figures.
At first glance, the laws of supply and demand seem to be seriously out of whack. Since 1990, trends in the worldwide supply and demand for cocaine and heroin have been more or less flat, but prices have dropped 50 to 80 percent. In the above article they explain that the "intermediation margin" -- the difference between producer prices and retail prices, has collapsed.
The cost of getting the product from Afghanistan or Colombia to New York or London has plunged.
And you can thank the awesome efficiency of global markets for that:
Transport costs have been reduced and the use of the internet has allowed to dramatically improve the efficiency of the distribution of drugs and made it possible to cut on the number of intermediaries. The internet has also made the communication between demand and supply safer and quicker, leading to better stock management, and has much improved communication among dealers. In addition, the explosion in the size of international trade flows has made it possible to better conceal the transport and the distribution of drugs. Finally, the sophistication of the international financial markets has greatly increased the scope for money laundering to remain undetected. All this has led to a decline in the cost of distributing drugs.
The authors also suggest that the "risk premium" -- the danger associated with getting involved in the drug business, and which consequently results in high prices, has declined because of the flood of new participants in the global economy as a result of the opening up of the economies of China, India and Russia.
So there you have it.
And here's something for you to remember tonight when you leave your 4' x4' box of death to go home and do bong hits with your neighbor; the US might be imperialistic, warmongering, and in total collusion with every major corporation, but they're keeping the weed nice and cheap.

Thats fucking terrible. Everything is much cheaper in the dirty South. Being a major hub, 3.5 grams of white or an 8 ball is $100 no matter what neighborhood in Dallas and pills are brought by the truckload from Mexico. In my part of the world a g of C costs €50 which is around $80.
Sure my dealer was my friend until, like Caul mentioned, his problems entered my livingroom.
The poor bastard suffered from dyslexia and managed to keep himself away from his own goods most of the time. An occasional weekend party and that was it. I was doing his logistics to reduce his risk of losing all at once which worked fine until he started to get mugged on a regular basis.
He moved away.

That graph says blow is still about $200US a gram retail? Is that true? I thought it was like half that over there.
In Australia you're looking at about $300-$350 a g and probably getting 80% flour.

As far as "the war on drugs" goes, no one WANTS to win it kids. How many jobs in this country exist simply because of the perpetual "war" that we have been fighting for years. Lawyers, judges, cops, corrections officers, fucking stenographers (sp?) even reporters are all making their living based on this war. If it really stopped what would happen to those people? if it really stopped MY GOD those people rotting in jail for an ounce of weed would be out on the street working for a living and paying TAXES! Instead of waiving bye bye to the rapist/child molester from the "mentally unstable" cell block who just got out on bail and is going straight to the nearest fucking playground to do it again. Fuck the war on drugs. Its as useless as Iraq.

Interesting but how do "they" know the price of drugs? I'm just wondering because from time to time they'll be some drug bust and its crazy what the reported prices are. Wow really 20 scruffy pre-sexed weed plants with a street value of over 1 MILLION DOLLARS.
That being said, you shouldn't really pay for weed. It does, after all grow on trees as it were. You can sink about $500 and a storage room into your own hydroponic personal use factory. Given the whole war on drugs has driven weed production underground the strains are much more potent and with a perfectly controlled environment it's not exactly rocket science.

Living in the city, I can tell you that's probably not a good idea. If you own your house it's also not really worth the risk as they can seize the whole thing outright. I only smoke occasionally so it's worth the money.

A drug person can learn to cope with things like seeing their dead grandmother crawling up their leg with a knife in her teeth. But no one should be asked to handle this trip.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers...
