I realized earlier today that I could use AHTT to do actual plays, and in a way before even more esoteric.

I'll do "actual" ones eventually, if you don't consider this a "real" AHTT, even though it so entirely totally is.

If you like the English language you'll like Bukowski. Even if you don't care much for poetry, you'll like him. Start with the book 'You Get So Alone At Times That It Just Makes Sense.' I've read the damn thing 20 times and I still love them all.

I meant to say Mary Oliver. God, I hate that woman. She's the John Grisham of poetry.

Do a conversation between Charles Bukowski and Sylvia Plath or Anne Sexton, or someone significantly lamer like Anne Sexton. Or maybe an actual feminist. That'd be fucking hilarious.

---

I haven't read any Bukowski though I so, so entirely know that I should. Schoolwork has me so tied up that I don't get to do any real reading that I want to do.

Feminist artists bore me so, soooooo much.

University knowledge is now available to the public for free!!!
MIT is posting ALL its course notes at http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Global/all-courses.htm ,
Which is fucking groundbreaking if you think about it in a historical sense.

My god.

It's at the threshold when the artist thinks to himself "I AM AN ARTIST" that he loses his relevance and his worth.

Who the hell are you trying to please?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whatever happened to "I think, therefore I am."

This is some fine art, unrivled by untalented fucks such as yourself.

He's taking this in a new direction, and the "I fear change" is showing in you.

Clearly, he's trying to please me, and he's doing a damn fine job.

this is a failure on your behalf, not the audience. the whole point of doing anything like this is to get people to read it and hopefully laugh/enjoy it, and the more people that do this, the point there is to you doing it.

---

I think this is where we have a fundamental difference here, and where the definition of the role as "entertainer" begin to get muddled. I've always felt that someone like Conan O'Brien, a person paid to be funny on TV, has a certain obligation to meet his audience. Not just a contractual obligation, but the audience has a certain sense of entitlement to it, rightly so, because in situations such as these they are the most important commodity. The more of them the show gets, the more $$$ the show gets, too.

I feel that most internet authors, and myself included, don't have that sort of obligation. I would like to be able to entertain, but it's certainly not my job description. It's a hobby, if you could even call it that. But like hobbies, this is less about satisfaction of the audience and more about mine.

Aside from that, something needs to be done for the percentage of people who did and do get these jokes. If Joe Average User feels alienated because the material wasn't common enough for him, that's fine, he has a whole internet full of Perez Hiltons and Maddoxes and other entertainers who have much less esoteric themes for their jokes. But what about the percentage of people who do know who Chrysippus is, or are at least interested in finding out? If people are less willing to find out, it might be me fault, but certainly it's not the fault of the theme itself. It's the fault of the writing not giving people the incentive to do the usually minor research work beforehand.

Really, all I'm saying is, I know there is a small group of people I'm making this comic for. But they deserve a comic too. One of my favorite comics, I just linked to it on BAW, is XKCD. It has some of the most obscure math jokes I've ever seen. I'll never get close to understanding a word of it. But aside from the fact there there are enough comics in the series that I do understand and enjoy, don't the math nerds deserve a comic too? Doesn't the math guy who WILL understand a heavy math concept feel cheated when it's dumbed down to appeal to the average user? Maybe. That's sort of how I feel. I know I have a small audience, but hey, I'm being loyal as hell to them.

you really are jsut fucking completely delusional. i parrot noone. i say what i think, jsut like you - its just that my thoughts are better than yours. im not going to go sift through the piles of shit you write here, but you KNOW damn well youve directly told us all how wise and spiritually enlighted you are, and indeed told us all how much more you think youre enlightened than us, then you come here and tell spooner here that hes a dickhead for saying that he's an artist (though thats merely been inferred by you, rather than a direct statement). youre a fucking tool who mistakenly thinks it is much more than the utter wate of oxygen trash that it is.

go check your phone maybe its still being tapped. say hi to your tramp of an internet girlfriend while youre at it.

My god.

It's at the threshold when the artist thinks to himself "I AM AN ARTIST" that he loses his relevance and his worth.

---

and yet you constantly go on about how spiritually enlightened and wise you are, you fuckin hypocrite.

----------

Show me where I've done that. Find it or fuck off. You're making shit up, parroting what you've heard others say about me as if they were MY words.

ive never read, seen or studied waiting for godot. i have a rough idea of the play, but very rough.

this is a better idea than the (i feel) overused notion of using obscure historical or literary figures, as many more readers will have a decent idea of what youre doing with it, plus the hand turkeys make things funny in and of themselves. if reference to your point about being happy entertain 60 or so people doing it 'the way you want' or whatever; in my opinion while this entiment sounds noble it is in fact a little sour grapes. people are losing interest in your idea, now the novelty has worn, and are not willing to go study the references of your skits to 'get' the joke. this is a failure on your behalf, not the audience. the whole point of doing anything like this is to get people to read it and hopefully laugh/enjoy it, and the more people that do this, the point there is to you doing it. rejecting the rejection of your 'art' is not the right course of action. you need to think abotu why interest in your site has dwindled - aside from the mere nature of internet attention-spans and readership (which is an essay all in itself) - there has to be some thought about your approach to the way you entertain your readers.

i think the concept is a good one, and you are obviously very clever and funny, but if yorue not getting readers, or the ones you had are dwindling, you might look at what youre doing to make this happen, and look at what you can do to reverse this trend.

or, it could jsut be thats its an internet comic you do for shits and giggles and you couldnt give the slightest fuck whatsoever. either way, i enjoy reading, and so do a bunch of other people.

Look, I love the awkward hand turkeys like I love THC and chocolate milk, but this was a piece of shit.

That said I could totally go for some awkward Hamlet (honestly, other then a couple of those long dead greek guys, Shakespeare is only playwright I know).

I think anything with Lady Bracknell would lend well to your humor, particularly when she's talking about Bunbury. You could probably also do Algy's quote about his being unable to eat muffins in an agitated fashion. Or simply make Bunburry show up somewhere towards the end, and insist that he never exploded.

---

I don't think I'd do anything from the play. I'd just take the characters and put them in a similar, but still different, situation.

It just seems weird to take an already humorous play and try to make it, um, humorous.

it so entirely totally is.

I experienced the same "life imitating art" experience hundreds of times while waiting for the bus.
