Amongst the long shadows
their forms barely seen
they walk through the alleys
'gainst brick walls they lean

with a tap of their canes
and a tip of their hats
they scare away more
than just the stray cats

hair slicked back perfect
kerchief at breast
shoes overshined
one thumb hitched in vest

they slink and they skulk
their grins fearful and sly
those who know best
never do meet their eye

for they're trouble, those men
with the long coats of black
as if ears to the ground
they're on top of the facts

they'll know if you cross 'em
wherever you are
they've got the informants
they've got the slick cars

no hesitation to harm you
no warning of word
and off you'll be dragged
and your cries, never heard.

Aw Lish, I couldn't have gone anyway. We'll party it up somewhere, eventually; and I'm sure the soundtrack will rule.
And yeah, I let it ring probably three or four times, but I was afraid i'd wake you.

O-Man: You know this.

Lish: I tried calling you tonight after my Spanish class but realized the time difference and was afraid I'd wake you.

OMG I WILL TRY AGAIN!

Did it ring a few times before you hung up? OMG I WAS LIEK TOTALLY AWAKE!!1 I miss you. Call me any time you want.

Ideally that's not all you'd have been doing during that performance.

You two really should find a way to put the O in Whoregon, you know.

Have you heard the song "Shankhill Butchers?" You should give it a listen.

I was positive I commented on this before.

Had the stars aligned in our favor, Coley and I would have been hearing "Shankill Butchers" live, TOGETHAR, at the upcoming Decemberists show when I crashed her house in whoregon.

Stupid stars hate me.

St_Jimmy: Thanks for the heads-up. I much prefer books over movie versions of stories for the most part, anyhow.

Coley - go ahead and take the advance to round 3. Rather than create any more drama than I already have, I'm deciding to take the gentleman's route here and gracefully bow out of round 2.

P.S. I liked this poem of yours.

Ok, I'm giving you two the same rating, since I thought CT's entry was a repost, and apparently it's not.

Someone else can figure out who goes to R3.

Coley darling, I have made my average score for your competition this round a 0.

Now I give you this -2 in order that my average rating for this entry is the same.

'Worth reading' is my honest rating, which I hope you accept as such.

I decided I am certainly not the ethics arbiter of this contest.

Though I think CaptainThorns clearly violated the rules and should be DQ'd, that decision is better left to the contestants or the person running the contest.

I actually think his poem is better that yours.

But since it was written long ago, that means, in its creation, there was neither time constraint nor expended effort.

Clearly you should advance.

I'm terribly sorry for any pain my reversal has caused you.

My thoughts are with you in the difficult hours until a final decision is rendered.
=====
You actually made me laugh out loud.
Damn you, I refuse to LOL again!

I love SK. I never finished Dark Tower; I only read the first two or three (at the time they were the only ones out; so you can see how long it's been) and I haven't wanted to read the rest until I had a chance to go back over them all from the beginning.

Hearts in Atlantis..it's been a long time for that one, too...I liked it alright, and I *do* remember that phrase.

Hmph!

Lish: Perhaps I was influenced by that classyass party I went to last weekend...mmm..men in suits.

OK, so I really enjoy Stephen King, but I never read The Dark Tower series. I know, I know. I'm saving it for now. But I DID read Hearts in Atlantis, and so I can say that while I read this I kept thinking "Low men in yellow coats.."
