Two years ago I hiked up to the top of Mount Excelsior, a small peak. It was a an exceptionally clear day, and I decided to sleep at the top to observe the stars. I have never before seen the sky so clearly. The Milky Way peered down on me, and I felt small and insignificant. I watched meterorites streak across the sky, and I let my mind wander to the vastness of what is out there.
Anyway, this poem is written in increasing syllables one per stanza. From 1 - 13 and then back down to 1 again. I was trying to capture the feeling of how small I felt and how infinite our universe is.
I have attached a collage of images from the Hubble Telescope for each space object I name.
Infinite
Night
Flight
Moonbright
Starlight
Calming breeze
Gentle tease
By small degrees
With expertise
My body reaches
Heaven beseeches
As night envelopes me
To a higher degree
The celestial wonders
To view God's greatest blunders
Saturn rings, comet dust flows
Jupiter's sister red spot glows
Pluto awaits me farther in space
Spiral galaxy pulls me with grace
Floating much farther than ever before
Nebulas beauty reflected once more
Planetary nebula gaseous cocoon
Ghost Head Nebula as bright as harvest moon
Three Trillion Mile long jet from a wobbly star
Massive star VY Canis Majoris so far
Planetary Debris Disk encircling yellow dwarf
Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae morph
Millions of galaxies beckon me to reach them
Monocerotis shines like a sapphire gem
Is there an end, could I travel ever more
I lay on the mountain I can not ignore
My body calls me homeward I must turn
Away from the beauty although I yearn
To find an end to this universe
Its wonders so many and diverse
Sliding backwards towards my home land
The mountain and the meadowland
Neptune's blue welcomes me home
Red planet I can not roam
Dawn is approaching me
To a lesser degree
Small and infinite
I approach sunlight
On this small trek
I am a speck
Earth again
In the main
Daylight
Earthbright
Day

Makes me smile. I'd love to see stars like that.
This reminds me of some Joanna Newsom lyrics-

That the meteorite is a source of the light, and the meteor's just what we see

And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee..
